R.I.P. D.A.A.C.
OCTOBER 29 2004 - DECEMBER 27 2007
Well, the mighty hand of bureaucracy finally came down on us last night.
Apparently, some kid's parents called the fire marshal on us for being over capacity. They wrote us up for several violations, and said I can expect calls from various other city inspectors today. I do not believe this is a battle we can win (or afford) so this is it, the end of an era. All shows are canceled. Thanks to everyone who played or booked or came to shows. It's kind of amazing we made it over 4 years.

:( that makes me very sad.

Wow. This really really sucks. A lot.
I loved the DAAC.
Posted by: Mike at December 28, 2007 12:22 PM
This is bulls**t. Just as I was going to start booking more shows, the DAAC is closed. Not to mention its being an important part of making Grand Rapids not such a crappy place to live. I hope you open another venue somewhere soon, but regardless of what you do, I wish you luck in your affairs. RIP DAAC

Posted by: Anonymous at December 28, 2007 12:51 PM
let's not be hasty. the daac is pretty resilient. we're meeting at foodsmith on january 5 at noon to discuss the options. come if you have ideas and a willingness to help in any way.

Thank Jeff for supporting the arts in GR and for providing a safe haven for young adults to hang out and have fun. Thanks for encouraging young artists and for giving them a venue to develop and express themselves. I was there last night, and I am a supporter. I am also a "mom", thanks for investing in our kids. -mary-

I am passing through Grand Rapids the day after you close. I live in Brooklyn, New York now and haven't been to west Michigan in many months.
It is a sad day to see the closing of the DAAC. You will be missed.

Wow. Good place.
Posted by: Stephen Chavis at December 28, 2007 2:32 PM
Ditto.
P.S. Wow, holy fucking random bullshit. I really hope there are some of those options that Chad mentioned. But even if the money/ambition is there, would there be anywhere in the neighborhood to go? Half of the beauty of the place was the locale...
Posted by: Justin at December 28, 2007 3:02 PM
can someone tell me where foodsmith is, im interested in offering some idea at the meeting on january 5th
Posted by: Anonymous at December 28, 2007 4:08 PM
G-damn. I have the faith, however, that the D.A.A.C. will either come back or be replaced, just as it replaced the Elite Restaurant, which replaced the Pop! Cafe, which replaced Arco Iris on Fulton, which replaced itself when it was on Bridge which replaced on and on and on...
The faith shall be kept, and if worst comes to worst, we can set up a series of house parties in Heritage Hills.

This is sad news!
Posted by: bemf at December 28, 2007 4:26 PM
damn. this is a really sad event.
this venue has been one of the main venues for amazing local and underground music for a good amount of time.
this really bums me out.
i really hope there is something you guys can do to keep it alive.
if not, i will miss you DAAC.
Posted by: kyle at December 28, 2007 4:52 PM
This is such bullshit
Cant we do a fundraiser
Or anything. Im sure there
are so many people that
Would throw down to save
You.
Posted by: Dylan at December 28, 2007 10:08 PM
this is really unfortunate that someone would go through so much effort to ruin a good cause
venues like the daac are what is helping clean up the grand rapids area and making it into a nice cultured area
i hope that there can be something done to save this
Posted by: sheltie at December 28, 2007 10:39 PM
RIP Daac I love you. Thanks for all the memories.
Posted by: Karen at December 28, 2007 11:29 PM
This is absolutely ridiculous, we can pool enough money and support in the community to make this work, we can do this, don't let defeatism ruin this! There is still so much we can do!
Posted by: Rob at December 29, 2007 2:39 AM
Fuck GR!
Posted by: Anonymous at December 29, 2007 3:57 AM
don't worry, the DAAC is still here.
foodsmith is across from the DAAC on S. Division.
12noon, jan 5.
Posted by: chad at December 29, 2007 2:21 PM
uhg D: i cannot believe this.
this is really sad. the DAAC has been such a great place to go to. they're taking a little piece of GR culture away.
if there's any way i can help, let me know.
i hope something can be resolved and you can find a way to get something else started up.
Posted by: Ryan at December 29, 2007 2:25 PM
I'm so sorry this happened. The DAAC was the ONLY place in GR where cool bands played. What the hell am I supposed to do now??
Posted by: me at December 29, 2007 2:52 PM
this fucking sucks. i'm going to miss this place so much.
Posted by: evan at December 29, 2007 5:35 PM
Fire codes ARE in place for a reason, though and it's to keep people safe. That, and it is very important to have accessible exits....just read the news and you'll see why when people are injured or killed trying to get out of a building. Fix those things and you should be good to go! Instead of getting mad at people doing their jobs, take action and fix the problems.
Posted by: Anonymous at December 29, 2007 7:53 PM
Thanks to Jeff and all for all of their hard work!
For those of you on here insulting the "man" and the woman who called, I think you need to check yourself as the City was only doing its job to protect you.
Your energy should be spent on taking action- organize a fundraiser.
Posted by: Anonymous at December 29, 2007 8:15 PM
it you need two lit exit signs to find your way out of the DAAC, than fires are the least of your problems
Posted by: Anonymous at December 30, 2007 5:52 PM
That sucks. There were really good shows there, too!!!
:(

Posted by: Anonymous at December 31, 2007 2:50 PM
I'm coming to the meeting at the foodsmith.

"it you need two lit exit signs to find your way out of the DAAC, than fires are the least of your problems"
Im going to have to agree with who ever this is...
If you need to honestly put exit signs up in the DAAC to find your way out
b/c of a fire
your fuckin rediculous,
my living room + my kitchen is bigger than
the daac,
yes saftey first yada yada..
but honestly
i hope the daac stays some how
its helped the local music scene so much
and it'd be a real shame to see it go like this
=(

I'm willing to support where and when I can fit in, have been a part of the five one (RIP) since the beginning, feel free to contact me anytime. I know of several others that have basically given up everything they'ved owned to try and keep our venue alive, and are willing to do the same for you.
