The third episode of DAAC TRAAX, an audio calendar of things coming up in the next month here at the DAAC. It broadcasts live on 88.1FM WYCE here in the Grand Rapids, MI (and on the internet) at midnight (EST) on every first friday of the month. Then we stick it here for your podcasting pleasure.

This one got a little weird because of some technical difficulties. But will technical difficulties stop the rock? NEVER! Co-hosts Kyle and George simply soldiered on until everything just sort of fixed itself with no intervention from them whatsoever. It could have been way worse. Trust us.

This episode covers the month of March 2010, and includes music from:

Flying Without Wingz - DAAC TRAAX Theme
Religious SS Disorder - Unknown

Flying Without Wingz - DAAC TRAAX Outro (same as Theme)

Check out the calendar of upcoming events for more details about everything we mention in the podcast.

Special thanks to Kevin, Matt, and especially Kyle at WYCE for letting us do this thing. WYCE is the greatest little community radio station on the planet, and is a proud service of the Community Media Center. They're the best!

Tune in for the undoubtedly magical next episode of DAAC TRAAX on Friday, April 2nd, midnight EST. See ya then!

This is the second episode of DAAC TRAAX, an audio calendar of things coming up in the next month here at the DAAC. It broadcasts live on 88.1FM WYCE here in the Grand Rapids, MI area, on the internet through the magic of online streaming, and then exists in the end as a podcast right up there.

This one was waaaaaay better than the last one. While we were able to preserve much of our plucky charm (read: awkwardness), Episode 2 seems way more professional right off the bat thanks to a new theme song by the unbeatable Flying Without Wingz (Holy crap guys, way to BRING IT!). We also got way more creepy thanks to a snacktastic bumper by WYCE's Kyle Colter - our more than gracious host at the radio station.

And to make things even better, episode 2 features an incredible in-studio performance from our dear friend Jes Kramer. Check her out, y'all.

This episode covers the month of February 2010, and includes music from:
Karisa Wilson - Bossa Nova
White Pines - Name As Son

We made zine! That's it right up there.

It's all about the DAAC. What we are, what we believe in - and most importantly - how YOU can you get involved. That's right. You!

It's a single page, 8 panel zine, with a fold out poster on the inside that lays out the 10 main points the DAAC abides by. It is the most succinct declaration of what we are all about thus far.

You can pick up physical copies at the DAAC, and various local shops around town. You can print out your own from the .PDFs on the resources section.

Oh, we also made a resources section. Riding on the buzz from last week's volunteer fest / zine release /pizza party / rock show (thanks The Spirits, you are rad!), we stayed up super late and put it together as a permanent place to corral all of our extra stuff.

Right now it's the permanent home for the zine, for an incredible guidebook Jenn Schaub wrote for throwing your own DIY art show, and our logo (so you can stick it on a flyer when you organize your next event)

We are going to add more things as they come along. But that's it for now. Is there anything else you need? Let us know!

We are very pleased to announce the all new DAAC radio show and podcast, DAAC TRAXX! On the first Friday of every month at Midnight (Thursday night), DAAC TRAXX will be live on the airwaves of 88.1FM WYCE in the Grand Rapids area, and then on the internet in podcast form some time later on. It's not yet in iTunes, but we are going to try to get it there. In the meantime, click on the play button above to listen right on this page.

This first episode was, admittedly a bumpy road. We messed up something major right off the bat - we couldn't get our laptop to play through the mixing board. But Sam figured out what was wrong and it was smoothing sailing from there on out. Sort of. We took out a lot of the early mistakes and dead air (yikes!) out of the podcast version, but not before we made a bunch of weird references to our failures. Whatever. It's cool. We are getting the hang of it.

Here is what we played:

Josiah Gentry - GR Rockstars
TwoTonTyrant - Concrete Beds
Ribbons of Song - I Can Hear It In My Sleep
Glowfriends - Charade
Brook Pridemore - A Brighter Light
Brook Pridemore - Trite Fidelity
Minnesota - Divorce
Seth - Monkey
Rick Beerhorst Band - Little Piece of The Pie
PK Fire feat. Andy Lamb - Meet You There
White Pines - Our Things in the Street

These are just a few of the artists playing at the DAAC in January 2010 - for a full schedule of events check out calendar here.

We want to give a special shout out to Kyle from WYCE for letting us crash his time slot once a month and to Matt and Kevin from the Community Media Center (of which WYCE is a proud service) for actually letting us on the radio. We will make it better. We promise!

The DAAC is not only a venue for bands. It is a place for poetry, watching movies, holding potlucks, having art shows, making things, finding a sense of community and exploring the options. All it is missing is you.
We all have stuff that we want to do... a favorite band that we are dying to see.... or artwork we want to display.... or a fundraising event for our favorite cause. The DAAC is the place to do that. The DAAC is THE PLACE for YOU to do THAT.

So how DO you get a show at the DAAC?
1. Figure out what you want to do... if you play in a band and want your band to play at the DAAC, find a few more bands and find out if they are interested in playing a show with you.

2. Look at the DAAC calendar for a few open dates that work for you. You probably want to think about dates that are about a month out. (at least)

3. Come to a DAAC meeting and reserve the date..... You will need to have a DAAC board member work the show with you. They will show you how to use the equipment, fill out the paperwork and take care of putting your show on the calendar.

4. Then you can start promoting your show... invite friends, family and even perfect strangers.....use flyers, facebook, email, tattoos, do it how ever you want..... but get the word out that you are having a show...

5. Then do the show... rock out, make stuff, have an event. After the show, clean up. You are responsible for cleaning up the space at the end of the night. Taking out the trash, putting away equipment ect.

What else do you need to know about booking a show?

• The DAAC is not free. There is a charge to use the space (it's how we pay the rent) Events before 8pm have a cost of $35 and 20% of the door, shows starting at 8pm or after are $65 and 20% of the door.

• Starting price at the door is $6.

• All Shows are All Ages,

• No drinking/drugs in the DAAC

• Respect each other and the space

If you have an idea and want to book an event join us at our next board meeting to find a date. Check the show calendar for a schedule of upcoming meetings.

If you have other questions about the DAAC feel free to post them on our forum, there is a link at the top of the page.

Ben Schaafsma, a co-founder of the DAAC, died Saturday afternoon-five years to the day we first opened our doors. It has been difficult to comprehend the senselessness of his passing, but comforting to more fully understand the impact Ben had not only on this community, but every other he touched in his all too brief life. Ben loved the DAAC, and I can absolutely say without question that this little venue would not exist without Ben's vision, tireless energy, and guidance. He will be utterly missed.

Please join us, G-RAD and InCUBATE (two other collective organizations Ben was instrumental in starting) to celebrate his life. We are hosting a special potluck version of Ben's Sunday Soup granting program (read about all about it here) on tonight after his visitation. This is a potluck, so please bring a dish to pass, if possible. Otherwise, there will be loads of soup and other food available. We would like to use this opportunity to raise a little more money for Ben's family with a suggested donation of $10 per person. But any amount (or lack thereof) is welcome. Come remember our friend Ben. we will start gathering at around 7:00pm.

Also, if you get a chance, please leave a memory of Ben at his memorial.

Love to all,
George

Hey Guys,
Our good friends Casiotone For the Painfully Alone and Paleo are playing a show with our new friends The Spectacles to benefit the purchase of a better PA for the DAAC. As anyone who has ever been to a show a DAAC knows that this kind of upgrade is sorely needed. We are pretty excited about this! and this show! and, well everything! so come on out tonight and have a fun time helping out the DAAC.

check out out these kind words straight from Owen from CFTPA:

What's up, fellas? Tomorrow I am going to Grand Rapids to play a make-up show for the bummer cancellation back in April. I'm really happy to be sharing this show with The Spectacles, who are good friends from Chicago, and Paleo, whom I have never met but whose music I have enjoyed listening to in my home. The show is also going to be a fundraiser for a new soundsystem for the DAAC. The DAAC has faced some legal troubles in the recent past, and its staff of purehearted volunteers have worked really hard to get the DAAC up to code and totally leigitimate, and that hasn't left much time, energy, or money for things like new mics, cables, and other equipment necessary to put on really great all ages shows. So, to support the cause, none of the bands are taking any money for this show. Come help out the DAAC!

The show will start around 8pm, and we are expecting to be at capacity pretty much around then, so please show up early. As with all events at the DAAC, this show is ALL AGES and has a sliding scale entry price from $6 to $16 (or more if you want!) please pay what you can afford!

Love,
The DAAC
