My Bloody Valentine and My SK-1

This weekand at a garage sale I found, much to my delight, a Casio SK-1. The SK-1 is a small keyboard basicly meant for little kids that has the ability to sample sounds that it gathers from it's internal mic, or from an outside source. Circuit benders love these things because there are about a million crazy things you can do to it. James has or used to have one that he bent and it was pretty awesome. I remember around the time when he first got it he would play with it just with the back off so the circuit board was exposed and he would lick his finger and place it on the circuit board and it'd make really crazy sounds, and he could slow down the drum tracks and add fills and all sorts of cool stuff.

Anyhow after getting it home and putting batteries in it and messing around with it, you know doing what youd expect; sampling myself saying hello, sampling a whistle, sampling a clap, a fake cat's meow, a belch, ect... i decided to see what other fun stuff i could sample. So here is my current SK-1 electronic music and sampling set-up.

I also have an external mic to hook up to it. Pretty rudimentary. But i'm really just playing around with it and having fun. Most will take note of windows sound recorder, which is serving as my record, playback, and mixdown software. My itunes library is supplying my sample sources. And so here is a small example of how one human can destroy the art of another simply by turning their great guitar intro into a horrible black metalish dirge. He is me sampling the intro guitar to My Bloody Valentine's Sometimes, and turning it into a very sickening heavy metal guitar sample.

Sometimes-Metal-Guitar

I'm expecting death threats from Kevin Sheilds any day now. Anyhow the sound quaility is horrible and the musicality is um.. horrible, though i'm not really much of a keyboard player. But you get the idea, the SK-1 is a really fun toy, and in the hands of someone with more musical talent then I it could be a powerful tool.

yay!!!!!!!!!! i love my sk-1! brought it to taiwan with me! there are instruction online for doing some cool bends with the sampler, but i never went that far. most of my bends were just drum track variations, messing with those two rows of nodes on the left hand side. anything that involved more than a wire and some soder was over my head really, its hard to be motivated to learn more when your having so much fun just licking your fingers!
