oldest animation?

although the claims are being disputed, researchers may have found a japanese animation made shortly after 1900. this makes it over ten years older than what was previously thought to be the earliest japanese animation, Imokawa Ryouzou Genkan-ban no maki. anyhow... i couldn't help making my own little gif animation of it. imagine something like this but 50 frames long (almost 3 seconds).

from KineJapan (a listserv i've never actually contributed too)
edit: this animation is indeed much older. but i hardly think anything before film really counts.

sooo, as it is like 7 years older than fantasmagorie, doesnt that make itw way more than the earliest japanese animation...

i really have no idea. it seems like everyone has a different theory. im willing to believe it is the earliest (intact and accounted for) piece of japanese animation. maybe even the world. i guess i don't really know of any animation from france or the states that would have been earlier. anyhow... whats worth noting is that this seems to be completely original techniques. so even if there are earlier animations than this, this was created completely independently and can be considered entirely original in concept. maybe. maybe i need to go to school longer before i make statements like that. most of what i know on the subject i just gathered today from various articles and conversations on kinejapan.
