I had a really beautiful stay "up north" (I have actually not ever been any further North than about two hours car ride). James made us get lost in the forest right before sunset, really lost, and so we were stumbling around over roots and fallen trees in the complete dark for a while, with rolling thunder and lightning, and no trace of a way home.. It felt really good, although I was of course absolutely scared to death. In my mind I had good reason to be scared too. Not just because being lost in the dark forest in a thunder storm is one of everyone's very distinct early childhood fears.
Now, Michigan is really worth every bit of prejudice.
During the day I had heard gunshots at frequent intervals of about five every twenty minutes. That could have been because Ted Nugent was currently hunting for harmless animals that feed off plants, but the cause was actually some other neighbour who spends his time with target practice, day in and day out.
At the local grocery store I had seen a man in camouflage sweat pants, with a large happy grin in his face, whose t-shirt read "I'm smiling because they haven't found the bodies yet." (..)
Right after that I was confronted with a huge counter filled with different sorts of dried meat, looking like huge heaps of dried up cut up bodies, organized into different shapes and colours by a sick mind. I gagged.
So that much for my fears, Doctor.
But it was good in the woods, being reminded of the actual good fortune of being alive.

Grand Rapids, friends, is absolutely winding down for me.
Of course it's sad, but I also don't need anyone to throw roses at me with my allergies and all.
I was glad for this break, and I like being outside, eating caramel candy in front of a fireplace and being ridiculous. It was good to look at this state with all its sadness and its charm. It's like home, really.

i am going to miss you a lot. you know that, right?
