Sixty years ago the US dropped a nuclear bomb on the place on earth most closely resembling paradise, by common conception, with the only bad fortune of being under American protectorate. Eight years later the first and only ever H-bomb was launched on the Bikini Atoll. The 15 megaton hydrogen bomb vaporized three of the atoll's islands.
Henry Kissinger suggested not to give a damn because there were only 90,000 people out there.
The islanders were convinced to leave the atoll for the good of mankind. There was talk of God and honourable sacrifice.
It was “one hell of a good sales job,” a military official said.
