Geostationary Banana Over Texas

I stumbled upon this reading Wired Magazine's webpage. At first I wasn't sure. But now I think I like it. I'm all for public art that's transient and idiosyncratic. And it's just plain funny. It gives a nod to Cleas Oldenburg but takes it a step further, into space. Read the Wired article, my favorite part is about how the entire sculpture will burn up upon re-entry. The official website is here.

Art+Food

While I'm not actually a vegan, I'm still excited about the Wake Up Weekend vegan chili cook-off and art auction. I submitted a diptych, which can be seen below. I think this should be a cool event. Even though I don't feel the need to tell others to not eat meat (mainly because I eat it), I do think it's really important to understand where food, and other products like clothing and gasoline, come from. I really don't want to get into the 'compassionate killing' debate with anyone, and I hope that isn't forced upon the attendees of these events. The only thing I want shoved down my throat is large amounts of hot, delicious vegan chili.

Anyway, the art:

This is untitled. Sorry about the cluttered background.

Here's some other similar stuff I've been working on:

Lee Running on Division

Calvin's Art Department has a visiting artist in town, Iowa's Lee Running. Lee is currently working on a site-specific screen printing project at Calvin's downtown space at 106 S. Division (right across the street from the DAAC). Come check it out. She'll probably be working for the rest of the week. The gallery will be open during installation and afterwards. The hours are Wednesday 1-9, Thursday and Friday 1-6.

She's printing directly on the windows, walls, and floor. Come by even if the gallery is closed to see it through the windows.

Her work is nearly white-on-white, or clear-on-clear(?), so it's hard to photograph. Which is why you should come see it in person.

Also, Lee is going to be giving an artist's lecture on Thursday, January 11, at 4 pm in Spoelhof Center 105 on Calvin's campus. It's open to the public.
