chamomile tea and minty gum.

Instantly upon contact, the heat of the tea warms the gum to a pleasing texture. and almost as an afterthought the strong flavor of mint and the sleepy heaven of the chamomile combine effortlessly into a blissful concoction of taste and smell destined to soothe the mind of any man or beast. or man beast. or puma. i often take my mind off of anything that ails me by sipping chamomile tea, chewing minty gum, and daydreaming about a pair of proud pumas at play.

Almost every morning my Grandpa starts his day with fried country ham, fried eggs, and fried hashbrowns. He skips lunch, and then come dinner time he'll fry fish, or more ham. He likes to fry food, and it usually turns out pretty good. Although, once when I saw him dip out a huge spoonful of lard to fry catfish I was a bit turned off.

Unlike my Grandpa, I am not good at frying food. NOT GOOD AT ALL. The first thing I tried to fry was hashbrowns. They ended up like potato chips (I didn't know how long to keep them in). Everything else ends up burned, including the cooking utensils. I can't seem to get the hang of hot oil.

Tonight, I took another stab. I found a recipe for Curry Bean Burgers on the Hot Knives Blog that sounded amazing. Everything started out amazing. The barley looked good. The green beans and curry smelled delicious. When I mixed everything I was proud of myself. I made the patties, and heated the oil. After the oil was hot, I threw in the patties and everything started to fall apart, literally.

They started out in nice clumps, but as they heated up corners broke off, and they split down the middle. It was a disaster. I quickly rescued them and put them back together; the hot oil seaping out and burning my hands. After I pieced them back into patties I decided that was it. They were done.

Picture From Hot Knives, Obviously

They looked like the picture above, but in pieces and far from a perfect solid color. They tasted pretty good, especially with some avocado, and sprouts.

Would I make them again? Maybe after a few lessons from Grandpa?

Steve: "Packaging and design on cookies is amazing. Wonderful appearance that works great as a decorative and fun holiday snack. However, the taste is a bit of a let down. This could've been the perfect holiday cookie I've been looking (edit: he has been looking very hard) if only they tasted as good as they look. As for the "Dew," It basically ruined my night and almost the entire holiday season. Not only does it taste like algae-filled pond water, the design team blew it."

In conclusion, Mountain Dew is gross even if the packaging makes it look like a present. I want to brush the Oreo out of my teeth. Now."

Conclusion:

Holiday-packaged Mountain Dew: 1.6
Winter Oreos: 3.8

With an overall average score of 1.6 for Mountain Dew, we officially deem this product unsuitable for human consumption, holiday or not. Winter Oreos, on the other hand, slides by with a cool 3.8. By no means a perfect score, it's comparatively an ideal seasonal snack. We are happy to announce our approval for this product and add it to that canon of festive treats.

Welcome to Part #1 of an ongoing taste exploration into new seasonal snack offerings. Beth and Steve braved the intense weather conditions and patented holiday Meijer Madness to bring these colorful toritlla chips into our home, at reduced rate ($2.50/lb.). Our surveys judged the Merry Matties in the areas of Taste and Flavor, Appearance, Comparison to Classic El Matador's, Overall Experience, Overall Festivity, and concluded with our General Comments. Surveys were completed in secret on pieces of paper, which were recycled upon recording the results.

They have many great salads. You can create your own by choosing from a huuuuge list of ingredients. They also have fantastic paninis. Even with all the salad choices, I had to get my old favorite:

The first installment of Sara's Saturday SOUP! occurred today, and boy was it delicious!

Sara and her friend drove around town dropping off little purple baggies full of vegan cashew chili love.

I cannot properly express how deeply i love this little project. Not only was it fantastic soup - it saved me from doing the absolute last thing i really want to do on a lazy Saturday afternoon: cook! And it kept me full up for pretty much the rest of the afternoon.

Sara provides two scrumptious dining options: a pint for $4 and a quart for $6. each come with two fresh baked cornbread muffins. I opted for the $4 pint variety and as you can see from the picture above, it was still quite a bit of soup. I have to admit though, while i was satisfactorily sated i was left wanting a little more and would consider choosing the quart next time. i ended up snatching a few of todd's mellowcreme pumpkins and an especially juicy cameo apple for desert.

According to the note written on the bag, next week's soup is Golden Mushroom, and I heartily Recommend taking advantage of this service to all who live in the area. All you have to do is drop Sara a line at saturdaysoupGR[at]gmail.com with your order size, name and address, and approximate time you would want your soup delivered. Oh, and check her out on her soup blog here on G-RAD. it's well worth it, trust me:

The greatest find in Chicago, so far, is the Map Room - a traveller's tavern located in the Bucktown neighborhood on the corner of Armitage and Hoyne [map]. Besides the extensive selection of beers and Jay, the barkeep from Grand Rapids, every Tuesday night is INTERNATIONAL NIGHT!.

The way International night works goes as so - show up around 6 PM to get a good seat [ this usually means hauling ass from work . I trek it from Pilsen to make it there in time. Today I made it over 4 miles in just about 15 minutes on bike!]. Upon entry you receive a little ticket. This ticket is your entry too the best "free" dinner you've ever had. To get the dinner you have to order two drinks, each drink gets you a stamp on your ticket. Two stamps makes the ticket valid for the free meal. Every week a different ethnic restaurant comes to bar bearing the staples of their respective country. My first week in Chicago was Columbian, followed by Vietnamese, Japanese [sushi], Cajun and tonight - ARGENTINIAN!

Tonight's meal catered by Tango Sur:

One deepfried spinach empanada; one deep fried spiced beef empanada; egg noddles with spicey beef and sauce; salad.
To drink: Beer of the Month [$3.50 a pint], this month is Würzburger Hofbräu

Tonight I shared dinner with lots of friends - new and old. [sorry for the blurry photo]

at dinner: Stephanie and Travis were visiting from Grand Rapids. Andrew Ten Harmsel, Graham, Jessica, Amanda Mullins. Alison who just moved to Chicago from Grand Rapids who we randomly ran into and her roommate Michelle.

I will take better photos next week to share.

More information about the International Night can be found at http://maproom.com/inight.htm. If you ever show up, check out the table furthest to the back, Graham, Andrew and I will surely be there.

I had the shrimp tettrazini. As soon as they put it in front of me I remembered why I use to order it with no mushrooms: They used canned mushrooms. Who the hell does that????

Friday started with a trip to Halo Burger Halo Burger is a local fast food restaurant that has the best burgers in all of Flint.

Saturday started with an 8-inch Steak and Onion sub from Big Johns Steak and Onion . Big Johns is yet another local fast foodtype place. However, it is the only place in MI where you can get a steak and onion that is truly good. I have known people who live in Flint and work near Detroit that buy the Big Johns meat and sell it in Detroit. There is also one in Lansing if you ever want to check it out. Good stuff for real.

Saturday night @ 3 A.M. Coney Islands and Fries. Coney Islands are hot dogs with a "loose meat" type of topping made with mustard, meat, onions and various spices. They are usually topped off with mustard and about a half lb. of onions. I cannot handles that many onions so i get mine with just the coney sauce. If you are in a coney island in Flint and you need to order a coney dog.... this is the proper way "1 up" or if you want to it is "2 Up". I order them like this "2 up no onions or mustard, side of fries with tartar sauce". This is not a picture of the exact dogs I had saturday night.

Interestingly enough, I was at the Sloan Museum on Friday and they had a display of the local restaurants.
In the case is cups from Halo Burger, wrappers from Big Johns, a hat from Ya-Yas , plates, silverware, and a table from a coney island diner.

On Monday night, before the storms, there was a deluge in my belly.

I had already had a bowl of Pasta, but my dad and I went to the new wing heaven in Alger Heighrs to pick up some food.

I wasn't too hungry so I just got the Macaroni Wedges and some fries. I had never had them before and they were cheap. They tated soooo good, but then, I love Mac nad Cheese. I really want to go to S'MAC next time I hit NYC.

Anyway, these dudes are tiny, but they pack a bunch. I showed up at Geo's for some IBL and I thought I was going to just sit there for days. I only ate five little wedges (which are macaroni and cheese shaped into triangles and then fried, by the way) but I was so full.

Worth a try if you dig fried stuff. I may get them again, but only if I stick to my work out plan!

This past weekend my wife and I went to Chicago to do some shopping, visit Shedd, and go watch the Shanghai Circus (seem my post over at 1546 for that). I decided to keep a record of the food we ate so I could share it with my people here on POTLUCK!.

On the way to Chicago we ate at a Wendys, not very exciting, so lets skip that. The first restaurant we ate was Kamehachi

I started with a glass of Sake. Green Ridge/Dewasansan or something like that. I dont clearly remember it. It wasnt too bad at all. I would have it again. It had a fruity/rubbing alcohol flavor going on.

We then had "Dynamite", an appetizer that is various seafoods baked in a spicy mayonnaise type sauce served on a big shell. It is soo good.

Then, main course was served. My wife had The "Kamehachi Combo" and I had "Kamehachi Sushi B". The thing on the far right on the bottom place is an omlette type thing strapped to some rice. It was really good. Sort of sweet. The piece of fish next to it was the nastiest fish I have ever ate in my life. I think it was some sort of whitefish.

We did have dessert, but I am so fat that I forgot to take a picture of it. I had the Bitter Chocolate Cake, and my wife had the White Chocolate Mousse cake. Both are out of this world good.

The next day we walked about 6-7 blocks in the horrible heat to go to Greeketown. We had Gyros & Fries at Greektown Gyros . It is a fast food type gyro place, and it was very unhealthy, and VERY good.

You can see they put WAY too much of the cucumber sauce on the gyro, see the glob in the back there that I had to scoop off? It was enough to choke a horse

Later that night we ate at Bubba Gumps on the Navy Pier . Obviously a novelty place. I dont know if it was cause we were really hungry, or if it was really good, but I Ioved it. It was an hour and a half wait to eat there, but we somehow befriended the hostess and some dude name CJ who let us skip the wait and get sat right away.

Drinks: Mamas Blue Hawaian. It was really good, i know it had that Malibu rum in it.

They had a pretty cool system set up to get the waitresses attention. If you didnt need anything you left the sign like this:

If you needed something you set the sign like this:

Appetizer: Hush Pups. They are hush puppies with mahi mahi in them. They really were not that good. Sort of bland. I ate them anyway.

I had the Southern Deep Fried Shrimp. I am a sucker for anything deep fried, which explains my cholestorol of 275. These scrimps were soo good, and that coleslaw wasnt anything to sneeze at either.

The wife, being the more sensible of the 2 of us, ordered some shrimp fajitas, very smoky, but as she says, very good. I wouldt try them because I didnt want anything non fried in my mouth.

Once again we ate dessert, but I am so fat that I couldnt take the time to take a picture of it. I had a Chocolate Chip Cookie sundae. It was a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie in a pan with ice cream on top of it. Soo good. I could barely eat half of it. My wife had THE BIGGEST PIECE OF KEY LIME PIE EVER.

So this isnt Chicago, but this is how we ended our vacation, XO downtown Grand Rapids.

Singapore Slings

By the way, if you are on Michigan Street and you need some quick eats, you can pick up some Tunarama at the Walgreens

This spring I graduated from GVSU, my younger sister graduated from Culinary school and my youngest sister graduated from high school. So naturally, my mom is throwing a party/openhouse celebration. I figured I would invite g-rad peeps.

There is going to be an incredible amount of food. No meatballs. No chips + salsa. This is a straight up feast. My parents and sister have been cooking and baking for days preparing for this. Most of the food falls under the category of soul food (tons of ribs and such) and Brazilian (mostly sweets and apatizers).

So, anybody that I have actually met in person is welcome and encouraged to show up at the Fairfield Inn on east paris between 1pm and 6pm. I'll be posting pictures of the spread in this blog after the party.
