        <![CDATA[<p>In the spring, I was awarded the <a href="http://www.incubate-chicago.org/sundaysoup">Sunday Soup Grant</a> from <a href="http://www.incubate-chicago.org/">INCUBATE</a>. I used the money made from soup to finance the production of my very first oil painting! This collaboration with <a href="http://www.1st-art-gallery.com">1st Art Gallery [dot] com</a> resulted in an exquisite miniature reproduction of The Phantom- a drawing from The Hall of Horrors collection. Here is the drawing (charcoal, crayon, and spraypaint).<br />

A long time ago, during Calvin College's Interim, the Screenprint class paid a visit to Nick Stockton's <a href="http://www.g-rad.org/fwd/">fwd>> space</a>. He talked with the class about some great DIY screenprinting techniques and described his T-shirt projects, where gallery goers are able to customize their own handprinted shirts by picking stencils and colors. Stockton also pulled out this screen featuring some amazing folk paper cut-out images. What a wonderful memory I have of that day, including full coffee service, Dada movies, jokes, day jobs, and screen drawing fluid. <br />
Afterwards, we continued our field trip at <a href="http://www.servicereproduction.com/">Service Reproduction</a>, Grand Rapids' own killer art supply store.</p>]]>

Last night I met <a href="http://www.fereshteh.net/">Fereshteh Toosi</a> and <a href="http://www.ohioriverlifeboatproject.org">Carolyn Lambert</a> at Sports Pat's.  They are in town for the opening of their piece, The Boston Tea Party 2004, at the <a href="http://www.uica.org">uica</a>. We had a nice time getting to know each other as we drank <a href="http://www.jazzdietpepsi.com/">the Sports Pat's Special</a>, and talked about art projects and Grand Rapids. <p>This weekend we watched <a href="http://www.sonyclassics.com/devilanddaniel">The Devil and Daniel Johnston</a>.  So beautiful and sad, inspirational and dark- truly amazing.  I am a huge fan of Daniel's music and art.  I was particularly struck by the moment of relational printmaking discussed in the film.  Early in his music career, Daniel was distributing a lot of cassette tapes of his music, and since he had no dubbing capabilities, he would record the same songs onto each tape, each time.<br />
They would be variable tape editions made for each listener, but not personalized- just made again.  There is something so fascinating about the compulsion, the repetition, the multiplicity.  Originals, copies, multiples, auras by Daniel Johnston, troubled genius.</p>]]>

<p><a href="http://www.airdeparis.com/holler.htm">Carsten Holler's</a> newest sculpture, Test Site,  at the <a href="http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/">Tate</a> recalls some of the questions raised at the Group Work Panel.  <a href="http://faculty.gvsu.edu/wittenbp/civicstudio/">Wittenbraker</a> suggested that artists are responsible for the realm of imagination, and then we give ideas over to specialists, in order to execute and implement.  Who does Holler give this idea to? We talked also about the artist using/manipulating the public as subjects for his/her own interests. This work suggests another relationship between artist and subject.  We at powwow are really enamored by this Holler piece.  A proposition for the future.  A chance for play and thrills- a game.  A better world through art, and pehaps a better art through the phenomenological moment.  The disclaimer being that we at powwow haven't actually participated in/experienced the piece, only have we seen images which represent the idea.  (Where's the art, here, anyways?)<br />
Any thoughts, folks, on relating this work to the ideas of collaboration/relational aesthetics circulating from the panel?</p>]]>

Although, a few really interesting points of criticism about public art projects were made, and some thoughts about importing and exporting ideas were discussed in the context of G-Rad.<br />

        <![CDATA[<p>For those of you who were there, we at POWWOW invite your thoughts and comments.  For those of you absent, just a few more things to share:  pitfalls of collaboration=messiness, pitfalls of group work=exclusiveness, <a href="http://faculty.gvsu.edu/wittenbp/civicstudio/main/civic.htm">towns vs. clubs</a>, print exchanges and the international community>sense of place, public art as colonialism, and how to work collaboratively outside the comfort zone, re: ethnicity, gender, ideology, etc.<br />
We at POWWOW were thinking the whole time about Miwon Kwon's <a href="http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=10186">One Place After Another</a>, and it was brought up towards the end by Paul, and the Nest desk copy was produced by Anthony.</p>

<p>After the panel, we all lingered outside and continued the conversation in really interesting threads, heading the imperative to mix it up, break outside of your own group, cross-breed, etc.<br />
We have lots to learn from each other.</p>

<p>The relational theme is strong in the printshop- group work in full effect, conversations, gathering around the pressbed, hijinx, etc.  I am not a painter, and I wonder if the studio model is still based on the modernist paradigm of isolation and purity.  The graduate studios at <a href="http://www.art.uiowa.edu/">The University of Iowa</a>, where I was groomed, mantain this model today.  Painters have their own private space, and the Printmakers share rooms, with many desks, and share tools and acid baths and materials (ink).  Public vs. Private?  Does the print studio model Beaurillaud's notion of "dynamic agglutination?"  I am also interested in the characteristics and defining traits of the studio space-  what defines the print shop identity other than a press?  What defines the painter's studio even more than turps?</p>]]>

A soundtrack of ping-pong games plays and sounds remarkably like a typewriter.  Collaborative, action printmaking, and one of the world's best games.</p>]]>
