JANUARY 11, 2006

Hey everyone,
Tons of opportunities and a new section of the email that we are going to try out for a while and that is News, so we will see how that goes….. if you have a new website, or something for people to check out that will be the place to find it.

So here is the word on the Street For January 11, 2006

Emma mentioned the league of Women Voters will be having a meeting on Thursday January 12, at the United Way Center, which by the way, is a really interesting building, located over on Commerce. There is a reception at 6:30 and the meeting begins at 7:00 but you needed to RSVP by like, yesterday, However I would think that you could probably still get in if you hustle. 1-888-346-9270 or 517-484-5383 or office@lwvmi.org

On Thursday night the 12th if you are looking for some eye candy and a good time, come down and check out belly dancing with Laura Armenta. Hosted by and at Mezze this is a good time, not your average GR business, I know I have mentioned the Mango Tuna Wrap but let me take this opportunity to say that the $20 minimum is easily met if you get grub and a few drinks….. Food, drink, dancing women……

Friday the 13th, If you happen to be over at the lake shore or looking to get out of town then check out the the Holland Art Guild is going to have its first public showing at an opening at the Holland Area Arts Council. ( located on 8th street ( the main drag) downtown). 7-9 pm, sounds interesting the project is interactive and more info can be found at www.nagelkirk.com.. Kind of interesting to find out what is going on out there…. All of 30 minutes away… well 45 if you drive like I do……

Last week I went to Jukes and checked out their Saturday line up, not bad. No Cover, the place was busy but not totally packed. The music was easy to hear but not overwhelming, making it a great spot to get a beer, have a conversation, and still get to check out live tunes. In fact I think the three of us might have been the last table still hanging out…..

So this Friday the 13th Jukes ( located at 506 Leonard) is hosting Nobodys Darlin ( all girl String Band) and McBitch’n which was described as straight up bluegrass…..they are kicking it off at 9:30

Also on Friday the 13th, a mention of Delilah Dewylde’s brother, Aaron, in the band Harvyst, I don’t know if there is anything more different then their musical styles it sounds like Aaron, has some drastically different taste in music from his sister, it sounds heavey. Harvyst is selling tickets to the KLQ Heavyweight Series 2006 at the Intersection and you can get ahold of them through harvyst@hotmail.com tickets are 5-7$ other bands, Rise (9pm) Drawn in Blood (10pm) Harvyst (11pm) Through The Mist (12am) Staleface (1am)

On Saturday January 14th there at the UICA 24 hour theater is taking over they are going to start their buisness at 8 pm, so check it out 5 plays written, created, produced and performed all within 24 hours. They are still looking for some actors so if are feeling like trying your hand at it contact Rachel at yoroc111@aol.com

Help to create the vision for the 2006 street market, the first meeting for the Ionia Street market 2006 will be on Monday, January 23rd at 4:00 PM at Dwelling Place of Grand Rapids Located at 101 Sheldon Blvd.Grand Rapids Michigan, 49503 .

Also if you are an artist looking for a place to live we still have some of the Martinaeu apartments open to rent, they are really cool with open floor plans and lots of windows, there are still 2 storefront spaces open which would make sweet gallery spaces, so give me a call at work 855 0435 if you want a tour….

I have been looking for artists for the end of winter/ spring shows at the DAAC if you are interested drop me an email.

Premiere Skateboards moved into Heartside, check them out, they are located in the space over by the old 10 weston….Also All City Kicks is open and some of the Ideal crew helped them out with logos and such….

Tami and Jeff Vandenburg may be selling their place over on Wealthy, Two Stan’s ( an amazing name, I would love to have that sign) but still opening the bar in the bottom half, which would be called “The Meanwhile…..” So the long/short of it is they need community support to say that this bar thing is a go. After 4 years of work and turmoil, including rebuilding the foundations, and walls they need some support themselves… They are trying to fufill a dream, so if they stick a petition in front of your face, that is the deal, and they deserve a break…..These are two community minded people who need some community support.

There are some projects in GR that deserve special recognition. Next week on Thursday one of those will be wrapping up. I suggest setting the date of Jan 18th for“Celebrating Neighborhood Leadership: Women residents from Garfield Park and Baxter share their experiences as block leaders”

I think this week I have to nab a line from Tammy V’s email which said it best with “Viva Grand Rapids!” ….. Drop me an email at ioniastreetmarket@hotmail.com or jennschaub@hotmail.com.. (have I ever mentioned I love getting emails LOVE THEM!) Now WOTS is online at http://www.g-rad.org/projects/wordonthestreet/ or you can go to G-rad http://www.g-rad.org/ and then access it through projects….
Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom
