Grand Rapids

Hello everyone,
This weekend is notorious for mischief and great clothing, there are amazing parties everywhere, you can look gross or glam, and there are things to do everywhere. BUT of course as always I am not going to spend all that much time writing about the stuff you already know. SO here is a smattering of events, some attention worthy opportunities, and as always

Word on the Street for October, 25, 2006

EXCITEMENT! Before anything else I have to tell you what is making me pretty happy this week. There is a new business open on South Division. Stop by 120 S. Division between 7 am and 7Pm to sample FoodSmith’s great sandwiches, Coffee, pasties and other culinary delights.

Foodsmith Cafe

Ok so this week there are all sort of cool things on WYCE, it is their pledge drive, but they are featuring live music, selling great shirts designed by Reb Roberts. So tune in and support…. http://wyce.org/local_artists.php

This Thursday night you can learn about jazz improvisation, and polyrhythmic conception, The Sonic Openings Underpressure workshop and Concert is being hosted as Mexicains Sans Frontieres. Beginning at 6:00 pm a workshop will review quick and independent thinking in Jazz Improvisation. At 8 pm musicians Patrick Brennan, David Pleasant, Marlene Rice, and Brian Smith will perform. For the whole deal, workshop and concert 12$ to get in, if you only want to attend part of the event its 8 for each portion. Where is the Mexicains sans Frontieres???? 120 South Division Unit 226…. Friday

On Friday night if you are looking for a hard rocking show grab your 6$ head to the DAAC. With a Four band line up there are 3 local bands an a new band from Minneapolis. Check out La Dispute, Man at Arms and Ivan as well as special guest Stnng. Show starts at 8 don’t be late.

Ahhh… it is time for another 24 hour film festival. I have no idea who has participated in this event… But I do know it is run by Compass Academy, and that10 films will be shown at Studio 28, additionally many of the film makers are local so you might see someone you know, and I also know The Show begins at 8:00 PM, and it is is taking place on Friday. So now we are all on the same page.

So you’ve got your outfit picked out, you are a teenage-vampire with a blood allergy, or a disco diva queen, well once you are geared up I have to suggest this weekend’s best costume throw down. The Cobwebbed Costume Party. There will be music spun by Spydre Murphy, Silence, and Action Jackson. There is a $3 donation (Cover) and id you aren’t in a costume then you are just lame, lame. Lame. The space is at 1111 Godfrey, there is additional parking in the rear of the building and you can enter in the Dirt lot off of Godfrey… I would show up at regular old party time.

Destiantion 1111-Ideal Collective

Also this Friday night is the Monsters ball, hosted by Mustard Plug, at the Intersection starts at 8Pm and features Moto, The orphan, The Sleevers, Dangerville, and Draggin Anchors.

Saturday

Saturday the 28th the Nest is hosting two bands and a Potluck. The Lord of Yum Yum, and Patrick Elkins will be playing. So bring a dish to pass, get together at 6, but be warned the gig closes down at 8Pm. The nest is located at 613 Lyon around the corner from Martha’s Vineyard http://www.g-rad.org/nest/

Monday

This is pretty cool, Monday night ( the 30th) there is lecture at the Meijer Gardens by Mark di Suvero. Beginning at 7Pm the creator of “Motu Viget,” ( the big tire swing) will be talking about both, the process and the ideas behind his large scale sculptures. I spotted a download podcasts that had something to do with Mark di Survero from the MOMA online, but haven’t had a chance to check it out yet…. I have an idea this would be better. And it is FREE!!!

Local Website of the week.
So this week I wanted to point you to the website of a local performance artist, Gary Morrison. He performs a one man show called Ernie Pyle. If you are interested in finding more about Gary and his show, check out his website. http://www.morrison-tg.com

And in conclusion

Again I eat my words….. I like it when someone points out that I am wrong because it makes me more aware of something I did not know. There have been other local artists who have shown at the Fredrick Meijer Gardens, for instance Michael Pfleghaar. So that is even better long live local artists who are showcased at large venues! And thank you to large venues who value our local talent, who is most talented.

Help I need a costume idea? If you have a good one send it to me!
Looking for a roommate? Send me a bit of info about yourself, and I will see if I can make a connection.
