You know what? I just came to the realization that if this week's word wasn't short it wasn't going to happen, So I apologize for anything that gets left out, we will return to the extensive format next week.
Welcome to word on the street (belated) for October 24th, 2007
Friday night LaFontsee Galleries is celebrating 20 years in business. The show "putting our heads together" featuring over 30 artist and staff self portraits. LaFontsee is like an institution of art in GR, and you really have to see it to understand the Mecca-ness of it all. The celebration begins Friday night at 5 and runs until 8:30! Also tonight marks the beginning of their 20th celebration "give back to the community- 20/20/20" promo. Over the next few weeks stop by LaFontsee and choose from 20 different nonprofit organizations to receive a 20% of your framing sales as a donation If you are having a problem choosing one might I suggest the Dwelling Place of Grand Rapids????
There is an opening tonight (Friday) at the Water filtration plant/ from 6-10:00 Pm. The show is part of Paul Armenta's Active Site series and features artists from Aquinas, Kendall, GVSU, Hope and Western. ( I love that he is getting students together from all of these different schools, way to go PAUL!) The address is 1430 Monroe and I know for sure Teresa Z is involved but I am not sure who else, I have been in one of the building out there before and it is for sure going to be cool. I plan on swinging by after the Lafontsee gig. Check it out on line at http://activesiteart.com/slideshow.html
This Friday night at the DAAC is a Halloween Spooktacular with "the mighty narwhale", "Chance Jones" and "lighting Love" doors are at 8 music at 8:30 5$ all ages $4 if you come in costume!
Next! On Saturday night the UICA is hosting Art in the Dark their "illumination Ball" featuring the amazing fantastic Super Happy Funtime Burlesque troupe. The party is a throw-down with food by Naya (owned by the Bar Divani guys) and the dj for the night is JB Vries, begins at 8pm, costumes I believe are a must and you can get tickets ahead of time by contacting Jill at 454 7000 (I would say call today if you are interested, tomorrow might be too late
Saturday night at Jukes Chance Jones is playing with Lazy Genius and DJ Max, free to get in the door music begins at 9pm. I heard through the grapevine that the new owner of Jukes wasn't that cool and wasn't going to book cool music anymore, but I like Chance Jones, so I will take that as a sign that it might remain a cool place to hang out.
Speaking of places to hang out if you haven't been to the Meanwhile yet (wealthy st.) you need to check it out, Bear manor did the renovation and the whole place looks great. The staff is comprised of super cool hipsters, the owners are total Grand Rapidians through and through and the look of the pace is great, hometown bar with hometown art and the Chinese dragon in the back looks totally rad. Stop in this weekend for a beer!
I know Geo said this show is going to rock so I had to include it. On Sunday, (the 28th) Mount Eerie, Privacy, and Ribbons of Song are playing at the DAAC, indie rock superstars these guys are gonna make you fall in love with music, it is 8$ and of course it is also ALL AGES!
