Word on the Street For July 9th, 2008!
My apologizes for last week! I wrote word and was able to post it on G-rad but my email server wouldn't let me send from home and I was on a bit of a Va-cation!
This weekend marks the second Avenue for the Arts Market of the season. Summer is just flying by so I hope you get a chance to join us for all of the great music, artwork and summer chillin'!

On Thursday July 10th you can get an EXCLUSIVE behind the scenes look at the UICA's Artworks program! The program is super cool and you can get a sneak peak as to the new public art projects begin created for local organizations.There are two tours, one from 9-10am and another beginning at noon. I love the GR Symphony's Picnic Pops. Seriously it is so cool and I love seeing music and Fireworks all a the same time. If you haven't ever been then you need to check it out. There are tickets avaiable the night of each event and this week on Thursday and Friday they will be performing Sousa Tchaikovsky and Dvorak. Tickets are $14 for adults! Location Cannonsburg Ski Area!
The DAAC on Thursday is featuring Hell or High Water, Randy Thunderbird and Frank White, tickets are 6$ the doors are at 8pm and the show is all ages. Location 115 South Division.
FRIDAY JULY 11th
Check out the Grand Rapids international Folk Dance Society as they show off some skills! You can bust an international groove to over 15 different dances. Also they are always looking to add new dances to the repetoir so if you are interested in teaching show up with music! Begins at 7pm Cost is $5 Location is 1110 Wealthy St SE (Wealthy Theater Annex!)
You gotta love this, Friday night at the GRAM they are hosting a talk titled "The Art of Designing Unique Summer Beverages" yep that's right getting creative with a cup some ice and a little liquid pleasure. The talk kicks off at 7, before hand you can enjoy some live music.
Friday night at Skelletones (133 South Division) there are four bands "Under Anchor," "All Hype," "Signs of Hope" and "Damages" Find out more about skelletones online at www.skelletones.com
Friday nights show at the DAAC has been moved to Vertigo. "The Dodos" a band from san Fran are so big that tickets were close to selling out. They will be playing with two other great local bands, "the mighty Narwhale" and "Ben and Bruno" Tickets are 8 if you buy them before Thursday and 10 at the door, the show is all ages. Doors at 7pm.
I thought this looked pretty interesting on Saturday beginning at noon you can gather up at Wilcoxs park for "Activist Boot Camp" Don't be an average run of the mill sheep sign touting protester, instead gather some SKILLS! They are kicking off with a vegan potluck and then beginging at 1pm you can Learn basics of organizing a protest, discuss creative protesting, cover health and safety details (what to wear, how to stay safe) at 3:15 they will cover some of the legal issues and at 4pm they will get tough with Black Blocs, Lockdowns & Blockades......! DUDES! DUDETTES! Tonight is the night! I know last summer you kept saying you wanted to make it down to the Avenue for the Arts Market but just never made it.... And last month you were out of town! But NOW is the time ! come down and check out over 30 local vendors, the VOTE SMART bus will be visiting, free rad music by Clive, SeeYes and a few more bands! I'll be hanging in the info booth all night so stop by and chat.... ALSO a great time to check out Scavenger Hunt Vertigo All City Kicks Sanctuary Folk Art, Foodsmith well you get the idea, there is lots to do and a whole lot of fun to be had!! The Creston Neighborhood Association is holding a Bake Off in Riverside Park, you can sample pies enjoy some live music and there are activities for the kiddies, pies will be judged by a local panel and bakers can enter to win prizes. If you want to get in on the bake off action call 454 7900 or email email@example.com. Begins at 6pm and lasts until 8pm. Cost FREE!
Beginning at 8pm you can head over to Mos Eisleys Tattoo because they are hosting the Grand Rapids Fashion Project. Which sounds like a fashion show featuring local designers, it should be a see and be seen event... Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, the show is followed by a Silent Auction and Social at the Republic. Free Parking is avaiable in the Republic Lot.
Skelletones has a totally different feel tonight! They are RAVING! The raves have been going so well they are keeping on the dance beat. Featuring trance, house GOA, Psychedelic and some vocal and instrumental stuff they are starting at 8pm and going till midnight. A word to the wise these are drug and alcohol free so leave it at home! ALL AGES! 5 bucks gets you in!
Saturday at the DAAC check out Kill and Eat, Clear Days Always and A Paschal Circus,
6$ gets you in and the show is all ages!
SO SAD! Four Friends is closing and Saturday is their final night join coffee fanatics, baristas, performers, artists and downtown regulars in giving a fond fairwell to one of their favorite haunts from 9 until 11pm
