Word on the Street for July 16th, 2008!

Hello Grand Rapids!
The weather is great! I am loving the hot, hot, hot! After so many months of cold, cold, cold it is nice to be sweltering! This weekend the events are as hot as the weather!

Here we go another Word on the Street for July 16th, 2008!

This Thursday night there is a Critical Mass bike ride beginning at 4:45 in Veterans Park (corner of Fulton and Division) riders are called together to protest the US occupation of Iraq by a show of solidarity> Do we need to rely on oil? Nope, So get out and Ride! For more information visit www.activategr.org.

If you are looking for someone to sew with or just want to make something there is a project based sewing class where you can make a Top and a Tote. It begins on Thursday and I think is a two nighter (also Friday) the Cost is $63 plus the cost of the pattern and fabric. If you are interested call Ruth at 458 2778.

As always the GRAM is having a party on Friday with reduced admission. For $10 you can indulge in the Gourmet Buffet Dinner and then attend the evening lecture featuring the Art of Creating an Elegant Picnic! The lecture begins at 7 and there is live music beforehand. Location: the GRAM, Monroe Center.

Once a month Wealthy Street has been having an event called "the Walkies" Friday night you can check out a Movie at 8pm at the Koning Micro Cinema, Grand Dinner and then head on up to the Meanwhile for a drink on the patio. This week the movie is "El Mariachi" a shoot them up movie set in Mexico. Admission to the Movie is only $3! The Micro cinema is located at 1130 Wealthy.

Friday night Skelletones is raving, in the dark, no lights only glow sticks and dancing from 9pm to 2am.

Friday Night at the DAAC there are 4 bands and if you wear a Superchunk t-shirt (can I just mention I don't know what superchunk is...) you get in for free! But the bands are PS Eliot, Slack Mother Fucker, Fuckin Gnarly and We are the Union. Show begins at 8pm. All of you non super chunk people pay $6

I am super excited about this! On Saturday afternoon from 12 until 6pm K Studio and Art Goodies are holding a STUDIO CLEARENCE SALE..... things that might just be slightly flawed are up for grabs. Let me tell you, Shelly and Lisa, the extraordinarily talented ladies behind these two companies are SUPER attention detail oriented. Their mess-ups are our treasures! Location 2004 Oakwood NE. This Saturday is Uptown Trolley day! They have a Trolley that loops though all four Shopping districts and runs from 10am to 3pm. You can check out the Farmers market get lunch at Marie Catribs, stop by the shops on Cherry to check out Blue Blvd, Byrneboehm Gallery or Hopscotch and of course hit up the antique store in Eastown or City Knitting yarn shop! Oh the excitement of the possibilities of such an urban transit experience have me bouncing around in my computer chair!

Saturday morning at 10am you can head to Sherman Street for a Hip Hop Festival! The event is taking place between Bolbee and Neland. I can't find a whole lot of details so let me know how it is if you check it out!

Saturday night $7 gets you in to Skelletones to catch 6 bands... these titles run like a a Hemingway book, "Brighter Cities" "Tall Ships" "Set sail" "rescuer" "Fight This war" and Bullfights in Tijuana"

Visit the Fulton Street Artisans Market on Sunday and check out their vendors. Happening each Sunday, the Artisans Market takes place in the Fulton Street Farmers Market space.

Sunday at the Public Museum you can check out the planetarium and a presentation called the Cowboy Astronomer. Take a tour of the sky and explore the connection between western sky lore and modern science. Begins at 2pm and tickets are $3 (plus general admission) at 3pm you can catch the "under Starlit Skies" presentation that shows off the Constellations. If anyone knows of a place to buy one of those star charts I want to pick one up!

Sunday July 20th this Level is Clouds, Coach House and Glynis are at the DAAC, 6$ gets you in the door! For more details check out www.thedaac.org
