A hearty hello!
Tis' the time of year when you look at your calendar and realize there is something to do EVERY SINGLE DAY until after the New Year! Luckily most of those engagements are with friends, family or feature a holiday festivity...Because everyone gets so busy I hope you can squeeze in a little creative shopping time on Avenue for the Arts during the Urban Lights event on December 12th from 6-11pm....but more on that next week! This weekend roll out the calendar and make way for some excellent activities.

Here is Word on the Street December 3rd, 2008

THURSDAY!
The Symphony Holiday Pops performance for this weekend is Joy to the World! There are two performances Thursday at 7:30 and Saturday at 3pm. Santa will be there, there is a Handel Hallelujah Chorus Finale and the whole thing should be very... to use my favorite word of the day... Festive. Location 303 Monroe Ave NW Call for tickets 742 6500.

If you are in need of some musical comedy this weekend maybe the performance of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Wealthy Theater will be up your alley. There are two performances per day starting on Thursday thru Saturday...at 1pm ($6) and 7pm ($12) each day. Doors open 30 minutes before the performance, all ages Location 1130 Wealthy.

Thursday night at Skelletones catch Dan Cadillac and the Electric Racecars, Shotgun Dally, the Hydrants and Analog Sisters. Cost $6ish dollars Time 7ish doors... All Ages 131 South Division

FRIDAY!
The UICA Holiday Sale is here! On Friday night you can begin your shopping from 5 until 9pm! Last year I picked up a great Robyn Kane necklace, some great ceramic pieces and a stellar package of tree ornaments from Shelly Kline. Other favorite booths include two great Avenue for the Arts Artists, SEDesign and Teamwork bags. Cost to get in is FREE! But don't come without some loot cause there is no way you are going to want to leave empty handed! Location: 41 Sheldon All ages

On Friday night at the GRAM they will be lighting up the Christmas tree down by the Mya Lin... (5:30ish) last week we were lucky to catch them just as they were putting the lights onto the tree and testing it out... I love the predominately blue theme and I am keeping my figures crossed that there is enough snow and cold for the ice rink to be rocking a whole bunch of skaters..... Festivities include Tree Lighting, the skate cirle opens and the GRAM is free after 5:45

Also for all of you Young Nonprofit Professionals out there just a reminder that the YNPN will be hanging out at the GRAM on Friday night! YNPN is getting festive for the holidays and doing a bit of a meet and greet... if you get to the museum catch the lighting ceremony and then head inside it is FREE! And you can meet some great YNPN-ers!

Friday night at the Ladies Literary Club you can get festive with "A Very Rosie Christmas" at the music, sketches and a whole lot of holiday love. For Calvin students the event is $5 for the rest of us it is $12. The website has all the details (and a super cute song) www.rosiethomas.com Location Sheldon!

If you are looking to rock out a bit all ages style I would suggest heading to skelletones for a 6 band line up including Damages, Under Anchor, Hold me Back, Make it Clear, Gutted Out, and First Strike. Cost $6ish dollars Time 7ish doors... All Ages 131 South Division

SATURDAY!
Saturday the UICA Holiday Sale continues all day long from 10am until 5pm with gifts and goodies from a slew of local artists. If you stop in swing by the SED booth and say hi, I'll be on hand for most of the day. Location: 41 Sheldon Cost: Free
Another destination for great handmade gifts is Heartside Gallery. There are some AMAZING pieces by local artists. If you haven't ever been to Heartside Gallery this weekend is great time to stop by... meet the artists and pick up some killer gifts! Right around the corner (really like 50 steps away) from the UICA it is a natural second stop. On Saturday you can stop by from 10am to 4pm. Cost: Free! But you won't want to leave your check book at home. Location: 54 South Division!

Hum I can't remember if I have already included this but a friend suggested it and I sort of love the idea so here it goes again. On Saturday and Sunday at 1pm you can catch the Christmas Laser Light show at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Reports say it is a totally intense experience the cost is Museum Admission plus $3. Locaiotn 272 Pearl Street, All Ages!

The infamous Jes Kramer has her CD release party this weekend at Skelletones. Bands include the wildly popular Mighty Narwhale, Cookie Bumstead and the Lonesome Space Cadets along with Samantha Crain. Cost $6ish dollars Time 7ish doors... All Ages 131 South Division

SUNDAY!
If you have been looking for a way to get involved and support the DAAC but haven't found the right time this weekend you might just have your chance. On Sunday we will be giving the walls a fresh coat of paint, scrubbing the floors and going to town on the windows (lots of tape!) If you want to pitch in stop by at 12 on Sunday... wear warm cloths and come ready to paint it up! Cost FREE! All Ages! Location: 115 South Division

IF you are looking to get some off Broadway spectacular type action OR if you LOVE Billy Joel (which many of us secretly might..) then Sunday at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center will be the weekend hot spot for you.
