Or maybe a little conversation is more your style? The GRAM is finally getting the message that to gain support from the Arts Community they have to be SUPPORTIVE of the arts community... an interesting and foreign concept for some of the cultural institutions in GR. So Anyhow....The 100 year programming is going to include a series of community inspired "Conversations" created by and organized by local arts professionals. This means if YOU need a platform and venue to talk about issues dealing with ART and CULTURE that YOU are interested in and want a rad space to have it in, the GRAM is game. Conversations need to be inclusive community based and arts related. BUT you still need to jump through some hoops and there is a FORM to fill out... which I can send to you OR you can request from Kerri at pr@artmuseumgr.org.

If you are on facebook you can join the group.
Heeeeyyy-o!
It is almost the weekend and things are bumping. Flowers and sweets are flying off the shelves everywhere and reservations are being made for nibbling and nookie. I fully embrace a consumerist holiday where the main premise is showing one's immeasurable feelings of LOVE with measurable gifts... because I really enjoy getting and GIVING presents... I have already picked up the totally awesome gift for Mr. Man and can't wait till Sunday to give it to him! Never-the-less, there is some time to kill between now and then... and I have a few suggestions on how you might be interested in spending your time!

Ho,ho, howdy!

I have shamelessly blaring holiday music in both my office and my home for 3 days straight. A few years ago I realized the Holiday season had sped by and I had barely noticed SO to retaliate I now INDULGE in the holidays.... I listen to music, sit on my couch staring at my tree, cook seasonal food (this year we made holiday cookies) and I make a sport out of finding great presents and wrapping them. So I am going to overthrow the weather this weekend (we DO live in Michigan) because there are so many great opportunities to pick up gifts and relish in the seasonal cheer! Time to bundle up, snap on the snow shoes, harness the dogs to the sled and head out and about!

Hey Kiddies,
Well it is here. Artprize, Artpeers and isn't Destination 1111 this weekend as well? Grand Rapids is a total art mash-up and you know what? That is A-OK with me.

Since there is just NO WAY I could EVER fill you in on all of the event details I wanted to make sure you have the tools to plan a steller weekend..... then I included a TOPS (Totally Outstanding PickS) selection of spaces I am going to hit up and of course I wanted to plug all of the great Avenue for the Arts spaces so I have included a listing of all of their total radness.

.....if that doesn't get you going then you must be glued to the couch with indecision because frankly it is just TOO great of a weekend to even THINK about being at home!

Here is Word on the Street (the abbreviated version) for September 24th, 2009!

The Tools:
1. Have you seen the Rapidian yet? Have you started WRITING for the Rapidian yet? Have you replaced your morning news with the RAPIDIAN yet? Well if you haven't checked it out I won't tell anyone (http://www.therapidian.org) But I would suggest checking out some of their Artprize/Artpeers coverage, they even have a map!

2. artprizegr.com/ has some interesting commentary coming in from around the city. People are checking out art and posting on the site. You can RSS this badboy and see what people are saying.

3. Of course there is the official Artprize website which includes all of the openings, stats on who is placing where in the "competition" and some sweet photos from around town. Can't you just smell the glow of happy people looking at art? www.artprize.org

4. Artpeers has paired around 60 local artists with businesses in the Uptown area, they are hosting great live music all weekend (free) and having exhibitions at 29 local businesses. If you haven't heard much about them the website is great and the map is convenient and easy to follow....www.artpeers.org

5. The annual Destination 1111 is also going on this weekend and their blog spot is totally blowing up with a schedule of events that feels hyper local and some new artists on the docket. Bands, fashion, sculpture and frankly we don't have enough sweet warehouse shows SO get in while the getting is good! http://destination1111.blogspot.com/

The TOPS
These are my top selections across the board. There are at least 20 other spaces I want to check out BUT these are the DO or DIE events and places I am checking out this weekend.

1. Doing a bit of a walk about and checking out the outdoor art downtown. Hot spots include along the river, the Gillette Bridge with Civic Studio on it, the Blue Bridge, The Beerhorst wonder wagon, Project Propagate (corner of South Division and Fulton) Bill Taylor's piece on Goodrich and South Division and the intense catastrophic mess that is the BOB parking lot!

2. Checking out openings at outlying locations. Venues that are a bit further out are really laying on the love to get people to check out their shows. On Friday I would suggest the Grand Rapids Area Arts Council on Ottawa, The hot bands at Destination 1111 including, The Northern Lights Singers, Chinese People, Head, CS Seeyes and Paucity. On Saturday check out Artpeers from 1pm until 6pm including the bands outside at Coat of Many Colors and then head over to Tanglefoot to get local with a great tribe of artists.

3. The mega hot spots. The Federal Building, the UICA, The GRAM, 45 Ottawa... etc.
These are spaces I don't even think you have to attend an event to check out, just get in and check out some ART.

4. And of course the Avenue for the Arts is densely populated with a ton of great spaces. The nearest Artpize stop is Oakes and South Division. Because I am going to unabashedly choose favorites this week I am going to list each space and hopefully all of the artists. (My apologies to anyone who is left out!)

Alten Place 17 Division Hosted Artists: Kyle Wentland, Katsiddha Katrina Peters, Carol Papaleo, Lane Cooper, Robyn Bomhof, Jess (Annarino) Keeney, Eric Nugent, Brad Davis, Jasna Gopic, Sarah Mann, John Altyn, Joanna Papaleo, Alonzo Edwards, Ladislav Hanka, Jana Hanka, Ervin ( David ) Mulligan, John Mollitor, Judith Wieneke, Chad Seeber, Michelle Pittman, Christina Mrozik, Lenora Gouvea, Rosilene Matui, Lester White, Christopher Smith

Hi Folks
Seriously this weekend is one of my favorite fall weekends, with the Eastown Street Fair, the farmers market is oh, SO delicious, and the Mexican Heritage Festival! Its like my launch into fall and I always run into friends out and about over the course of the weekend so I feel like it is a big ole' reunion.

So here is it is a brief version of Word on The Street....because why spend the time talking and writing about events when we could be out enjoying them!

THURSDAY NIGHT
Founders has a crazy line up this weekend! Thursday check out Deholtz, End of times Orchestra and the Chinese People, two local bands, one visiting from Chicago. Go check them out $5 gets you in the door. Beers on tap, porch is still great for hanging out, good times to be had. Music starts between 9 and 10.

FRIDAY!
Friday night head out to FUSSION's kick off event at St. Cecilia's. I have seen Fussion perform bits and pieces at the Street market but this is suppose to be their grand entry in to GR performance. They describe it as a mix of traditional and modern song, dance and drumming. It is sure to get you jazzed up, in fact I guarantee the chant of "hey nah nah nah" will be presently echoing in your head a day or two later!
Location 24 Ransom Ave. NE
Cost:$10 at the door!

Friday night kicks off the annual Fiesta Mexicana which I thought I missed but thankfully did not! There will be live performances food booths, a beer tent and souvenirs. There is going to be a Vegan Bake Sale, Haircutz, to your liking, and glamour shots along with monster caricatures. And you can buy stuff! Then from 3 until 6pm check out the following Tokyo Morose, Cookie Bumstead and the Lonesome Space Cadets, Chad Go and Chad Golda. Locaiton 235 Grandville

If you have meet Elizabeth Vedrine you will remember her as one of the rare Parisians amongst a see of Midwesterners.
