WHEEEEWWW.... I am excited already. Hopefully you saw something that you are interested in checking out. So a quick review of the facts.
6-11pm Saturday night...South Division between Weston and Williams, Maps avaiable at 140 South Division (Sanctuary Folk Art)..... Over 20 businesses, galleries and studio spaces open.... See you there!

SUNDAY!
Sunday is great day to catch a movie.... And there happen to be 2 great ones at the UICA. First at 12 and 5pm you can catch a movie about the life of the illustrious Hunter S. Thompson, narrator: John Depp insights into an amazing actor!

The Second movie could not be any different. The Bollywood adaptation of Othello called Omakara is playing at both 2pm and 7pm... Bollywood.... Shakespeare... wow....

OPPORTUNITES.
The UICA has a whole mess of opportunities this week! I am totally thinking about applying for their Holiday Artists Market. This year there is no booth fee and instead a 30% commission is taken off the top of all sales... Which is... pretty good. There are over 750 people who attend the show and it seems like everyone normally does pretty well. The UICA handles sales and sales tax along with promotion...

Next up they are also doing their Annual Call for Proposals. I just want to mention that I feel like not enough local folk submit to the UICA. I would love to go and see more of YOUR work on the walls, spread across the floor or pasted across the windows...

and finally the UICA is also looking for artists interested in hooking up to duel it out art battle style. The battle will take place at the Intersection... and you have to submit examples of work at the Intersection. So details are at... www.myspace.com/artbattlemidwest

so I think that is a pretty good list of opportunities.... A little bit for everybody..

CLASS IT UP
Audrey Chapman just announced that she is beginning a class teaching Hatha yoga... the class will be fairly small with a pretty intimate setting. So for those yoga beginners it is a good way to get some one on one with the instructor. Classes take place Monday's and Tuesdays from 9am to 10:15 and Friday evenings from 5:45 to 7pm. Get on it NOW because the six week session actually started this week. If you are interested call Audrey at 915 7061 Location: 14 Williams. Cost: Classes are a one time fee of only $45 for one time a week, 85 for two and 125 for all three times.

PET!
Pet is a noun and a verb. If you want a noun/verb in you life then Sara Neal has the hook up. This week it is a Brittany Spaniel Beagle Mix named Lucy... but here is the interesting part... Lucy is part dog, part machine. (is all fun too cheesy?) She has 2 legs and her blacklegs are in a wheelchair... According to Sara she is pretty rambunctious and cute so if you are looking for a little love, companionship and puppy dog love drop her an email sara.neal@gmail.com

RANDOM QUOTE.
" If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean"

Ya' should let me know if there is some thing cool going on, I would love to add it to the list....Drop me an email at jschaub@dwellingplacegr.org or post a comment on the blog on G-rad.... If you want to see or read word with pictures or post comments, check it out online at http://www.g-rad.org/projects/wordonthestreet/
or you can go to G-rad http://www.g-rad.org/ and then access it through projects....

Yo Peeps!!
I just have to start with a bit of an art rant.....You might remember last week how I did a little swooning over the new UICA mural on the corner of South Division and Fulton. Well apparently someone else loved it so much that they decided to take a chunk of it home with them.....

So lets hypothesize that this, maybe the person doesn't know that high school students invested their summer into making those pieces. Let's pretend that they might not recognize that public art is for the PUBLIC to enjoy (not just individuals). Let's assume that the person didn't realize that borrowing the mural piece is STEALING........

So what could a person do if they suddenly realized all of those things and began to feel shitty about STEALING ARTWORK (because they should feel shitty)? That person could drop said artwork off at the UICA or if they were worried about people knowing what a total slime bag they are (because they STOLE ART from KIDS!) they could email me (jschaub@dwellingplacegr.org) and I would be pleased to find them an alternative drop off point (and would not judge them because returning the artwork is the RIGHT THING to do). SO if you know this art thief please let them know that they are greedy and should snap out of it.

Word on the Street September 24th, 2008!

FRIDAY!

Some times you can get some thing for nothing. The Really Really Free market is one of those places. You can bring "things" or "services" to share or give away from 3 until 7 on the corner of Fuller and Wealthy Street (you know the big empty lot?? That is where)

OPPORTUNITIES
The UICA is looking for an intern or maybe it is a part time employee. You too can join the talented ranks who help the facilitation of showcasing contemporary artwork in Grand Rapids. What would you be doing? The position promises corresponding with artists, maintaining files, packing and unpacking work and of course installing. You know a light 10-20 hours a week. To get the gig you need to apply with a resume and a letter of interest sent to info@uica.org.

So exact responsibilities are membership drive (I am already a member so no you can't recruit me) organizing, administrating working on the Christmas Tree Lighting, doing preview events etc. and yeah it is un paid and yeah they want a resume, cover letter and one letter of recommendation. Email all that to education@artmuseumgr.org.

You know all of those great metal tins in mom and dad's basement that hold day's worth of home movies? Well now you can find out what is actually in those dusty old tins during Home Movie Day at the Wealthy Theater! It's like real proof that your family did have those hairdo's! They are specifically looking for 8mm, super 8mm or 16mm. The event takes place in the future (October 18th) but you can start the archeological digging now! Questions? Call Jennifer (this is not me) 331-8072.

This was the original intro, now it is the outgo! I can officially call it fall. There is no more hope that the leaves won't turn colors and then create big heaping piles. It is HERE! And honestly I like wearing layers so I am looking forward to the fall wardrobe (hoodies, knee socks, boots, no longer deciding between a skirt and jeans, instead I can wear both at once!!) This weekend is a great one so get out the transitional wardrobe and the cider (yum!) and go adventuring in our fair city! Drop me an email, tell me what is going on with you, jschaub@dwellingplacegr.org. Check out G-rad.... If you want to see or read word with pictures or post comments, check it out online at

Word on the Street for September 17th

Hello Ladies and Gents!
This September is flying by! The weekend weather report is supposed to be a good one so enjoy it now! I plan on getting out and about AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Sweater weather is on the way and I don't want to miss a minute of jeans and t-shirt weather.

Here is Word on the Street for September 17th.

WEDNESDAY!
Over the next year or so the corner of Fulton and South Division is going to be all torn up. There will be cranes and digging machines and eventually when the construction dust settled "The Gallery" will be open for business along with a new and improved UICA. We are super excited to have them relocating onto the Avenue for the Arts and this Wednesday you can celebrate their ground breaking from 4 to 5pm onsite. It is also a great opportunity to check out the murals created by local artworks students that will be adorning the site during the first part of construction. (these pieces are pretty cool I have already spotted a few random people out taking pictures).

ALL WEEKEND LONG!
I totally dig the Who's Tommy. Most great musicals have some sort of weird plot accompanied by great lyrics and melodies. As a rock opera the Who's Tommy has that whole pinball thing going on.... ( I got a shirt at the show and wore it for YEARS until it literally fell apart) So beginning this weekend you can check out the musical insanity at Aquinas's Performing Arts Center. Location 1607 Robinson Rd. Cost 25 buck-a-rros! To order tickets and check for show times call 456 6656

FRIDAY!
Park(ing) Day, having begun as a California based protest was then spread nationwide as an activist "parks vs. cars" statement. Park(ing) day has been co-opted by the city of GR to promote its Green Grand Rapids campaign. On Friday, across the city, local businesses and individuals will be setting up "green" space in parking lots and parking spots in support of parks instead of pavement. So grab a lawn chair. Head to the streets, strike up a pro-parks conversation, and chill where you usually park your SUV or mo-ped.

The Walkies are this Friday (Wealthy's promotion to walk, eat and hang out along wealthy Street) they are sponsoring "Wet Hot American Summer" at the Wealthy Theater (taking place inside the slightly smaller Dirk Koning Miro Cinema. The cost is CHEAP, $3 for the movie (early 80's camp classic) and the show starts at 8pm with doors at 7:30!

Q. Where can you find 3 floors of art, live music (jazzy), cash bar, and local lectures each and every week?
A. Friday nights at the GRAM! this week guest speakers Jay Constantine and Patti Hendricks will be presenting new work (I love Patti's drawings) the talk starts at 7pm. and of course members get in for FREE! For non-members there is a $5 cover, (I am excited about the show that opens in a few weeks)

Friday means that the end of the week is here! And you can celebrate by rocking out hardcore to 4 bands at the DAAC. "Victor Fix the Sun" "Native (they always play together what is up with that?) "Reinventing Yesterday" and "Decoy Octopus" location 115 South Division Cost 6$ Ages- ALL

SATURDAY!
With quite a bit of debate and heavy hearts and TONS of rain the Avenue for the Arts Market was canceled last Friday. BUT it doesn't mean that you can't check out local artists and pick up great stuff from other locations. On Saturday swing by the Sparrows Coffee Shop on Wealthy for an artist market that begins at 10am and ends around 3. While you are there I totally suggest indulging in a crepe and a cup of tea. (their "cinful", Cinnamon tea is Freaking AMAZING. I love it!) anyhow art vendors inside and out! Location 1035 Wealthy Street! Free! All Ages

Helpful hint! If you are looking to do the rounds (Farmers Market Marie Cartibes, Fulton street Shopping district, Eastown) The Trolley will be running from 10 until 3 on Saturday! FREE!

I love the Eastown Street Fair, I always have. This Saturday's band line up is looking great and here are the highlights I am looking forward to. Deliah De Wylde and the Lost Boys begin at 1, at 240 the mighty Narwhale is playing simultaneously the Karisa Wilson band and Rick Chyme and the South Paw Players will be on stage at 4:50. Around 5:55 another local band getting lots of stage time, Nathan Kalish and the Wildfire, start up. Totally one of my local faves, Chance Jones rounds out the night at 8:30! There are quite a few other bands playing all day long. Of course there are a bunch of great art vendors and local restaurants and FOOD! ( I can't wait)

After the festivities on the street have ended head into Billy's for a beer and LaFamilgia! They will be taking the stage at 9:30 and "dropping beats" till close!

SUNDAY!
Lots of people I know think if Sunday as a day for religious reflection, so here is an event that has reflection and religion all over it. On Sunday at 11am you can visit Ahavas Israel (synagogue) which is also home to the All Souls Community Church (universalists) to hear speaker Dr. Ali Metwalli from the Islamic Center and Religious Institute. I know confusing isn't it! Essentially we are all invited to check out a little interfaith dialog with representatives from the three major abrahamic religious traditions. Location 2727 Michigan NE! ALL AGES! Free!

One more suggestion about buying local art, on Sunday (every Sunday) the Fulton Street Artisans market is the place to be. Beginning at 10 and usually lasting until about 2pm the artisans' market has definitely been gaining popularity. The booth space is fairly inexpensive for vendors and there are a variety of goods. Corner of Fuller and Fulton, Free! All Ages

Looking for live music on Sunday night? The DAAC is the place: "Stars like Fleas," "Ribbons of Songs," and "Potions." $7 gets you in! (PS according to the site 111.thedaac.org) you should try to be prompt cause they are going to start on time!

MONDAY!
Monday night movie? The DAAC is showing "Catching Out" Eco-activists, nomads and tramps ride trains and swim up stream against society. Cost $3, location 115 South Division, totally all ages. If you prefer chairs to the floor you might want to bring one along.

SUGGESTIONS!
Last night Mr. Man and I went out for a late bite. He was looking get dinner and I was interested in co-chillin. We ended up at Rockwells just in time for their late night sushi menu to hit the table. The prices were reasonable and the sushi was a late night treat. I would suggest the veggie roll but he warned against the spicy tuna, (Sauce was a bit to chili paste, not very subtle) Also there were some decent drink specials and if you like cheap beer they always have tall boys of PBR for a few dollars!

Ok so I didn't have time to cover Skelletones this week so check them out online. www.skelletones.org.

This week I was honored to serve on a committee working to select the finalists for the 2008 Governors' awards for arts and culture. It was super cool to see what the crème-de-la-Crème-cream-of-the-crop-rise-to-the-top-best-of Michigan are up to.. I think there are some really cool crazy artists and groups across the state making amazing art and culture happen.

You know the deal, if your event didn't make it into word then maybe next time you should drop me an email at jschaub@dwellingplacegr.org. If you are still kicking yourself for missing last week or if you have a burning deire to comment on this week's edition check it out Word online at http://www.g-rad.org/projects/wordonthestreet/ or you can go to G-rad http://www.g-rad.org/ and then access it through projects....
Thanks for reading all the way down to the very bottom.

Word on the Street for September 10
Welcome!
This is a very special invitation word on the street. I would personally like to invite you to the GRAM on Friday night. I will be speaking from 7-7:45 about the Avenue for the Arts and I would love to be talking to a group (sure my mom and dad will be a great audience but it would be really nice to look out at a few new faces.) So if we haven't met face to face before, please come and heckle me. It would be totally rad to answer some questions, chat and I would love it if all of ya'll would make it down. ( I even enjoy random "why is the sky blue?" questions!) So with the invitation on the table, and a little shameless self promotion. Here we are, on to bigger and better things.

(second class on the 19th) Gram members only pay $30 and nonmembers pay $40, they will be reviewing the history of Photography including techniques, types of cameras currently on the market and finally there will be a walk about to check out the "magic hour of light" and an onsite discussion about using techniques and styles, totally sign up ahead of time online at www.GRAM.org

So I already mentioned it but..... on Friday night at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, as part of their Friday Night Art Forum Series "Jenn" (AKA the person who sends you this email every week) will be discussing the Avenue for the Arts and the impact this arts-centric development has had within the local community. Learn more about local artists, upcoming events and the arts as an economic catalyst in downtown Grand Rapids. Friday nights at the GRAM there is a reduced entry cost (only $5) as well as live music by Randy Marsh. SO join up! 7:00 - 7:45 pm!

This weekend the UICA is going all out, their new exhibitions open on Friday night from 6 until 9 pm and let me tell you what, I got a little sneak peak today and some of that ceramic work is STELLER, like some of the COOLEST ceramic work I have seen in a while. I am really excited to see the show as a whole. The show features over 30 artists and explores sculpture and clay. There are solo shows by Dietmar Krumrey and Donovan Widmere. Totally FREE! Location 41 Sheldon BLVD (totally within walking distance from the GRAM)

Skelletones is hosting a rave from 8-1pm, unlike the raves of yesteryear these are clean no drugs no alcohol just dancing yourself silly types of get togethers.... So pick up a red bull and head out! 135 South Division Down stairs!

SUNDAY!
So I have to concede that fall is on its way. So over the next month be sure to schedule a Hayride at Robinettes, horses, apples and cider! They give rides on Sundays from 1 until 5pm and it is a great thing to do with friends family or a sudo-romantic date. It costs about $5 less for the little ones!

For those of you allergic to hay there is a downtown alternative to the hayride, a bit more pricy but a bit more classy. The down town carriage rides take place on Friday and Saturday evenings. The cost is $40 per half hour or $70 for an hour, and they hold from 4 to 6 passengers.... (yes I find the idea of a carriage ride to be totally amazingly romantic, but I really can't figure out why.......)

Sunday night at 8pm for a mere 6 bucks catch Emily Lacy, CJ Boyd, Jess Kramer and Chris Sommerfeldt. LOCATION: 115 South Division (other wise known as the Division Avenue Arts Collective.) ALL AGES So bring your buddies!

TUESDAY NIGHT
At the Intersection...... the LSDUDES are finally releasing an album (as in record). I have been to quite a few GREAT LSDudes shows. They are so catchy and freaking hilarious that it was a pretty big bummer when they disbanded. So for all of us who have been missing their crackpot ways I think Tuesday will be a treat. They will be celebrating with special guests The Chance Jones Band, the gig is totally FREE! The intersection is at 133 Grandville Ave. SW Grand Rapids Michigan and totally check out their online video bit, 100% LSDUDES

Word on the Street for September 3, 2008

Yo' Boys and Girls!
I am feeling it today. Hump day. There are two days behind us and the two before the weekend look incredibly long......But thinking about all of the great things I am going to do this weekend is totally keeping me on track.... Here are just a few of the things I am putting on my calendar.

Here is word on the street for September 3, 2008

THURSDAY!
Thursday September 4th Billy's in Eastown is hosting "Deals Gone Bad", "The Veloras" and "Dj Colin Clive" and here is the part that grabbed my attention "Deal's Gone bad's" description compares it to Jamaican Soul and 1960's ska (which has totally been our summer soundtrack, Jimmy Cliff is AWESOME) I am so in! This show is totally 21 and up. Dave Kirchgessner gives this show two thumbs up.

ALL WEEKEND!
Have you ever met someone who was really, really interesting and then you met their family and then they are also really interesting? That is what the Beerhost Family is like, each and every one of them is fascinating (and there are like 5-8 of them) and this weekend you are invited to come over to their house to check out art. From 10am to 8pm. (Which means it is a great stop on the way back from the farmers market 'cause they are located at 106 Fuller, just two blocks up) But you can visit Friday., Saturday or Sunday.

The love of all food Latin, Central and South American makes me look forward to the Hispanic festival with great anticipation. I also love the clothing and most of the music (I am not so sure about the stuff that sounds sort of like a Latin polka) So you can sure bet that this weekend I will head down to the Calder Plaza for some beer, ballads and tacos.12-12 Friday Saturday and I think Sunday...

And of course this weekend is Celebration on the Grand. Head down to the river front for music, food and Fireworks on Friday night, Chance Jones will be taking the stage at 5:30 on Saturday at Ah-Nab-Awen Park. There is food tasting in Rosa Parks Circle including tasty treats from Tre Cugini, San Chez, Bar Divani, XO Asian Cuisine, Cottage Bar and Z's Bar & Restaurant.

FRIDAY!
The DAAC has a free show on Friday (giving something back to people who support the DAAC), September 5th beginning at 5pm bands include "State," "Positive Noise," "Aura," "Dead Fun," "S/m," and "Final Word" Also featured are 30 years of Michigan punk posters. All Ages Bud-dy! Music at 6pm!

SATURDAY
I love the idea of taking a free class to try something out before you commit. This Saturday at 10:30 am at the yoga studio on cherry you can check out a Ti Chi class with Kyle Plagen and see if it is right for you (for those of use who are totally indecisive) location 955 Cherry SE call 776 0836 for more info.

Saturday you can get art and craft all over you at the 35th Annual Garfield Park Art and crafts Fair. The show gets started at 9am and you can stroll and art it up until 4pm, there is some kiddie entertainment food booths and I bet you will never guess where this extravaganza takes place? Garfield Park!

Tonight at the Wealthy you can SSSUUUUUPPPPOOORTT a great cause. Jakes Music festival is a fundraiser to support research for finding a cure for juvenile diabetes. The tix are 10$ and the bands include Midlife Crisis, Truckstop Cobras, the Waxies, end of Times Orchestra and Five Leaf Clover. They will be joined by Karisa Wilson, Todd Herring and Andy Holdgrieve (of Domestic Problems fame) Doors at 5:30 gig at 6pm.

Or head to the DAAC for an entirely different type of fundraiser. Remember that comic store owner who got shot a while ago? They are doing an all day benefit for him at the DAAC on Saturday and wait until you get a load of these bands. For only $10 you can see....."The Mighty Narwhale" "White Hot Skeleton" "Minnesota" "Lazy Genius" "Moto" "Support" "Nixon" "Rick Chyme" "Pear Snap" "Western Brown" "EPUS" "Apostles" "Cain Marko" "Tall Ships" "North Lincoln" and "Ozenza!" Wow!

After Celebration on the Grand you can keep the party rolling at Founders for a totally "Officially Unofficial Celebration After Party" with Eno Diamond and the End of Times Orchestra. 5$ to get in, music at 10pm totally 21 and up. 235 Grandville Avenue SW

SUNDAY!
Sunday night at the DAAC "Rodeo Ruby Love" and "Frontier Ruckus" will be performing, the show of course is 6$, the venue is all ages all the time! Sounds like a buck wild great throw down. Show starts at 8pm!

TUESDAY
September 9th at the Wealthy Theater catch 1979's "the Warriors" as part of the meanwhile film series. Gangs, NYC brawling and duking it out. One of the descriptions names all of the gangs in the movie including, The Furies, The Boppers, The Hi-Hats, The Lizzies, The Turnbull AC's, The Gramercy Riffs and of course The Warriors. That sounds like an awesome good pre-80's interpretation of feudal gang wars!

We are beginning to venture in to the gallery season. The season where there is more then one gallery doing more then one opening in a month, those cold months during the year when people seem to appreciate art just a little more.....On September 9the check out Erick Pichardo's opening at the Forest Hills Fine arts center from 6-7:30 pm. Art Caribbean style. (which by the way is very bright)

VOLUNTEER!
If you are looking to get involved with a great organization the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center is holding a volunteer training on Saturday from 9am to 12 pm. You can find out how to throw in a helping hand. One of the best things about volunteering at the center is you get to check out some rad shows for free. Like the band "Styx". For real. Call 493 8965 for more info.

Or if you are looking to forge some great new relationships get involved with Heartside Gallery by volunteering in their art room or clay studio. For more info check out http://www.heartside.org/volunteer.php

I am not much of a wine drinker. I have never really learned to appreciate the taste and have always concluded that I just haven't found the right one. SO this Friday at the GRAM I am going to check out The Art of selecting a Bordeaux Wine with Peter Eizel of Martha's Vineyard. I TRUST the guys at Martha's they know what the deals are what tastes good and Martha's makes me swoon because I love their cheese and deli section.
On Friday night 106 South Division (Calvin College's gallery ) is opening a new show "Propagule Pressure". You can enjoy work by Tory Roff and Karis Medina.

Word on the Street for July 30th!
Hey guys.
I have to admit, I am still loving the hot. The Hot Hot summer. It makes me feel happy but it is sort of hard to sleep..... There is something very comforting to me about wearing flip flops every day, the daily rituals of watering my flowers, lots of barbequing ALL THE TIME. So I plan on just enjoying the hot this weekend and here are some of suggestions about how YOU can enjoy the hot.

SO Delivered to your inbox, posted online, burning up your weekend schedule with so much great stuff. Here it is Word on the Street for July 30th!

WEEKEND!
This weekend at the UICA there is a pretty great looking movie that features a Michael Jackson impersonator, who hooks up with other impersonators and then somehow Werner Herzog is a priest and there are flying nuns. So crazy huh????!!! You have quite a few opportunities to check it out . Friday at 1,5 and9. Saturday and Sunday at 1 & 5.

FRIDAY 1st
This weekend marks the renaissance of ABBA in Grand Rapids. On Thursday or Friday you can check out ABBA's Swedish cover band Waterloo playing with the GR symphony. They have performances on both Thursday and Friday at Cannonsburg. Granted it is a bit of a drive, and you have ot bring a picnic (oh darn!) but it is a GREAT way to spend a summer night. Tickets are $22 for adults starts at 7:30 pm. (there is usually a warm up band and I suggest getting there early for a good seat.

This Friday at Skelletones you can Rave till Dawn. With a bunch of Guest Djs. Begins at 9pm dance till 3 only $5 gets you sweaty, pulsating in a thriving mass of teenage flesh. Sounds like a sticky time.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and the Spectacles both out of Chicago. Since it is a benefit there is a sliding scale ticket price 6$ minimum but for those of you who can, a few extra bucks would be great!

SATURDAY 2nd
The Michigan Shakespeare Festival is performing at the Ballet theater over off of Grandville this weekend. On Saturday you can catch their performance of "Alls well that ends well" at 2pm. I think most people have a bit of apprehension when going to see Shakespeare but over all you can't not like the stuff it is so well written! Fore more info about the MSF email them at msf@acd.net

ABBA invasion 2! "Mamma Mia" (a stage musical featuring ABBA songs) is taking place at the DeVos Performance Hall this weekend. I am assuming tickets are around 20$ the show starts at 800pm and you can call 742 6500 to find out more.

I am not a big fan of the Intersection. BUT this weekend they have a KILLER line up. Mighty Narwhale, Chance Jones and Nathan Kalish and the Wildfire. The show starts early at 7pm $5 gets you in but you gotta be over legal (over 18)....

Saturday night totally different feeling at Skelletones. The SKA Spectacular includes bands like "the Skoundrels, the red shift The new Urban Sprawl and the Risk. So lately I have been listening to a whole bunch of old ska and it is totally freaking cool, like reggae meets 50's boppers meets Motown. 7 dallahs gets you in and of course this show is all ages! (133 South Division!)

SUNDAY 3rd
On Sunday at the bloom collective on Wealthy Street check out the collective organizing workshop. Beginning at 1pm the interaction if sliding between 5 and 10$ you know facilitation, consensus, decision making, fundraising conflict resolution and more.!
