WORDS
JANUARY 15, 2007 10:03 PM

some words i've learned since i started reading Miroslav Volf's Exclusion and Embrace:
pyres- combustables to burn a corpse
tacit- unvoiced or unspoken, understood without being openly expressed
misanthropy- hatred of women
syllogism- deductive reasoning...
aphorism- general truth
misogynous-hatred of women
androcentric- centered on, emphasizing male or masculine interests
terse-abrubtly concise
ontology- nature of existence
vacuity-emptiness, void
tautology-needless repetition
coalesce- to grow together into one body

and i don't care if you think i'm dumb for not knowing half of these words to begin with... i don't read very much and didn't learn enough vocab in middle school (dang public schools). But i have bookmarked Dictionary.com and life is getting better.

just some clarification:

misanthropy is not hatred of women specifically, but hatred of humans or mankind in general.

syllogism is a specific type of deductive reasoning, the kind that says "if a=b and b=c, then a=c" and related statements.

tautology only means needless repetition when speaking of rhetoric. in logical discussions, it means something that's obviously true without having to give any other proof. (e.g. all men are men) obviously these are related definitions, but they're a little different depending on the context.

aphorism is more like a synonym to proverb than "general truth"

i mis-typed my short notes for misanthropy... i just wrote down the most pertinent (for me) words from dictionary.com... not the complete definition. but thanks.

I believe most vocabulary comes from reading and internalizing on your own (like you have just done.) Middle school is not a good scapegoat, especially considering the brilliant writings of many who where mostly self-taught. That aside, I learned a few words from your post and would love it if you would continue using this process to learn new words and display them for our viewing pleasure.
