REQUST A WHOLE FOODS STORE IN GR!
NOVEMBER 6, 2006 12:13 PM

Send Whole Foods an email, requesting a location in Grand Rapids.

Wouldn't it be nice?

Just click on the link at the top of the page that says suggest a new store location.
Let's flood the office with emails, folks.

There were rumours that Whole Foods (or "whole paycheck" as I hear they're sometimes known) already have plans to open in GR, probably out in a new development close to the East Beltline near Celebration Village.

There have also been some reports about Trader Joe's opening in GR, but just as many saying they probably won't.

I have mixed feelings about the idea of either store opening in GR. On the one hand it'd be a great source for those of us who want easier access to more ethical food, but on the other they both (particularly TJs) have a history of contributing to urban sprawl and don't do as much as they could to reduce food miles.

These are some savory pics! Can I have the recipe for Coconut Cake?

is it possible to do this for a trader joe's too?

Trader Joe's contributes to urban sprawl? I can believe it, but all the ones I know are in well-established metro areas. There aren't that many right in cities because real estate costs factor into their ability to sell stuff for cheaper than wholefoods. There is only one in Manhattan and it is technically on NYU's "campus." There is one in D.C.

I think that if they open up a wholefoods in GR, it should be right by the downtown YMCA (amd GVSU). It is at the intersection of 2 major highways thus serving; 1)people living in the city, 2)people can easily hop on the highway and get out to stank old Ada/Cascade or 3) slide down 131 into the fire depths of Wyoming and Byron Center.

That is how they can meet their median income requirement. GR has a lower median income(37k) than Cascade and Ada (both over 80k), and even Wyoming has a higher median income. Add all those in, and you have an insanely large market, but you only have access to them at that intersection.

If we have to have a stupid highway cutting right through the city, let's at least use it as it was intended and make these fools from the suburbs come spend money in our town.

YES ANTHONY!
i was thinking too that downtown is perfect for all those reasons
plus with all the new development, art museum, avenue of the arts, etc.
it seems like a natural fit

if i had to drive there, i would NEVER ever go. so it pretty much needs to be downtown for me :)
