Smarter Than People
[Setting: Sunny day with fluffy clouds overhead in a subdivision in Ann Arbor. Brothers play in the front landscaping of their house.]
BROTHER 1: If you were an ant, which plant would you live in?
BROTHER 2: (Scans the array of shrubs, flowers and other plants) Probably this one because it's soft. You could lay in it like a big comfy bed.
BROTHER 1: Yeah, but you're a small ant, so it doesn't matter. How about this one? You could hide in the middle. It would be a great fort.
BROTHER 2: No, this one. It's purple. You could blend in better, and hide in the middle.
BROTHER 1: Yeah, you're right. And it has tall leaves so you could climb up high and get a good look out.
BROTHER 2: I wish we were ants.
BROTHER 1: Me too.
BROTHER 2: Let's pretend we're ants. But, we're smarter than people. What kind are you?
BROTHER 1: A black ant.
BROTHER 2: I'm this type of ant with big pinchers. I don't remember the name, but it can bite people, and kill them in an hour.
BROTHER 1: Wow. Oh, well, then I'm a red ant.
BROTHER 2: Okay. Let's go.
(This is a conversation I heard today while washing windows. I just wanted to write down the dialogue so I'd have it for a short story, but I thought you'd enjoy it too. It made me really miss being a kid.)
