It's strange how life leads you in directions that you never imagined. A few months ago I was a little bummed out that I didn't get a summer internship organizing some major Detroit area art festivals. It was between me and one other person and I didn't even get a kind "thanks but no thanks" letter or email. Instead I took a summer job at the zoo as a face painter / caricature artist. While training for this job I attended various classes one which was hosted by a local clowning group. While clowns can be admittedly creepy they have come to facsinate me. Clowning has an interesting history...
What I'm trying to get at is that I want to become a clown. I think it's sort of my calling. I don't think I'm especially funny and I'm sort of reserved around strangers. However I love to wear costumes. I even applied to be the Peppino's pizza mascot on Lake Michigan Drive. Atleast I think I turned the application in, I can't remember. Kyle and I have our own super hero costumes and we've worn them to vote in. And I love love love love love Halloween. Thus the idea of having a legitimate reason to go out in costume and act like an idiot intrigues me. Also as a clown you have a chance to do a lot of great charity work and make kids and adults happy. And you can work gigs and make side money in this cruddy economy.
So I'm enrolling in a clown class this fall taught by Clown Antics a local clown supply shop. It was slow at work the other day so I designed a clown costume with some face paints on a scrap of paper. I am going to make most of the costume by hand. I've decided to sew the polka dots on myself. Some of them will be hidden pockets for various business cards, balloons and magic tricks. I haven't designed the clown bloomers yet. I figure I'll need to make some to go over the tights since the skirt will be kind of short and I might end up doing some physical gags.
