Costumes and Comics

Over the weekend Kyle and I and his brother, Nicholas, went to the Motor City Comicon. I didn't buy anything due to lack of funds but I did take some pictures of the amazing Tusken Raider clan! The pieces on their masks are real metal...amazing! I wish I could have asked them all about their costumes and how they were made. Perhaps I'll track one down.

Also the 501 Legion was there and had a considerable booth space. I love people with costume obsessions...it doesn't get any better.

Art Homework

My advanced drawing class ended a couple of weeks ago. Here is some of my work. I wanted to comment a bit on these but I'm running late to my new jewelry class. I'm slowly improving and wish to improve further. I wanted to put a little more effort into the class than I did but teeny-tiny steps forward are better than nothing...enjoy...comments and criticism welcome.

My secret identity....

So for the last three weeks I have been an Easter Bunny at the Twelve Oaks Mall.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/249/451191402_77bdac360d.jpg?v=0"

Being the Easter Bunny is one of the hardest jobs I've ever had. The head is burdensome and hot and constantly threatening to fall off. It provides very little vision which is limited to only that which is directly in front of you. The Easter Bunny wears a hollow fat suit under his clothes, thus holding babies is very difficult. And some of their mothers were stupid and would throw their fat babies on me and walk away for like ten minutes at a time while my arms went numb and I desperately tried not to drop them...

I could go on, but in the spirit of Easter, I will point out some of the sweet things about being the Easter Bunny. Kids from about 4 to 8 think the bunny is simply amazing. They would hug me and give me hi-fives and ask if I liked carrots. Some kids don't want to leave, rather they wanted to sit next to me all day and they cried when their parents made them go. Others asked if I would remember that they would be out of town for Easter. Some very considerate children would tell me about their siblings, who weren't there, so that they wouldn't be forgotten. Children also bring lots of letters and drawings for the bunny...

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/240/451211833_b04c684f02.jpg?v=0"

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/245/451191344_a6559cef0c.jpg?v=0"

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/203/451191400_826ad8e399.jpg?v=0"

The effect of commercialism is very apparent as quite a few kids ask the bunny for Nintendo Wii's, new bikes and Heelies. But many kids still ask for candy, eggs, stuffed toys and bubbles.

Being the Bunny was a very surreal experience. It's strange to have children believe you are a giant rabbit. Some of them believe in the giant rabbit with all their heart, like only a child can. I think that the ability to believe in the impossible is the most beautiful thing that we lose when we grow up.

When I would take off the suit and walk around the mall I would see the same children and parents who had just visited the bunny. Sometimes they would end up next to me in the food court and they'd be playing with the toys I had just handed them. Neither they nor their parents had any idea I had just posed for a picture with them, a picture they will keep and look at 30 years from now. It's a funny thing to be in hundreds of family photo albums and not be at the same time.

I wanna be a tramp...

I've been working out a second clown character in my head for a while and I've finally put it to paper. I needed a character that was less time consuming. My current whiteface character, with full face makeup and 11 piece costume, takes about an hour to get into. While this character is great for parades, it has many pitfalls. The fancy hand dyed and sewn gloves aren't conducive to balloon twisting or face painting. And I am forced to drive in a bald cap as the 2 foot tall blue beehive wig doesn't fit into my car.

Thus I'm developing a second character, which I am currently calling "Bottle Caps the Clown."

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/245/451220893_6496da16e8.jpg?v=0"

A modernized but yet classic hobo, in a cut off black suit jacket and pants, black (perhaps red) and white stripes and various patches. I plan on converting an old suit case as a way to carry props and balloons. I'm uncertain if I will incorporate a painted black beard. While clowns are technically without a sex, I just think having breasts and a beard would be confusing. I also plan to break a clown rule and show my arms, and they are obviously not masculine, thus again the beard would be weird. Without a black beard the face paint would look strangely Auguste, which is a different type of clown all together...the beard predicament....erg...it needs more thought.

Prismacolor Marker Review

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/167/431709604_6d362ec8e5.jpg?v=0"

So after 5 years of wanting to invest in a set of prismacolor markers I finally pulled out the visa and went for it. Here are my thoughts...

I purchased the 48 color set soley because the 72 set was not available at the local mega-chain art store where I had a coupon and Dick Blick's shipping costs are ridiculous.

I used a 50% off coupon because it would be dumb to pay full price as the mark-up on these markers is absurd.

I checked out some online reviews and tips. The best tip thus far is to keep the marker moving on the paper to avoid funny dark spots.

I started on my first project...

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/145/431732814_3685c6f079.jpg?v=0"

I quickly found that the uber bright color selection of the 48 boxed set is not ideal. I went back to the store and purchased a few warm and cool greys as well as eggshell and brick white. I still lack good skin tones. I will have to special order them but that's always a gamble as web color don't really reflect reality and shipping is a bummer.

The small end of the markers are much larger than the former design, which is good because it keeps them from drying out however I am finding it difficult to get a fine line without moving quickly which leads to errors in the direction of my lines...something I am working on.

For black lines I'm using a copic sketch (brush) marker, which is hands down my favorite possession. I would love to own a set of color copic sketch markers but they are far too rich for my blood. I've also heard good things about chartpak markers and they make a fleshtone set which seems promising.

One Eyed Beauty

I've been working on a self portrait for Advanced Drawing Class. I really enjoy this piece in it's unfinished state and for some reason I don't want to draw the other eye in. But I think I have to for the grade...and to keep my status as a sane individual.

Adventures in Doll Making Pt. 2: Painting

When my paper clay doll dried it had the appearance of ceramic, but was much lighter. I gave it a quick sanding with some fine grit paper, wiped off the dust and spray painted it with a matte black paint.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/105/410955189_9106e18e25.jpg?v=0"

In addition to the paper clay doll I have been experimenting with Sculpey Modeling Compound. Sculpey is much harder to mold, as it is very soft, however once it dries it is much more sturdy and can be sanded with a great deal of pressure.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/124/410955197_e05a5d25ca.jpg?v=0"

I made a crow's head and some wings. I initially wanted texture in the wings, but after baking them I changed my mind. Luckily it was easy to sand most of the texture out without a problem.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/145/410955191_f12f862c2b.jpg?v=0"

After the rabbit was spray painted I was ready to add details and attach the limbs. I applied off white paint to the stomach, face, ears and tail. I found that doing this free hand worked the best. I then painted on the eyes, nose and whiskers, before applying multiple coats of matte varnish....which wasn't really matte...but it turned out for the best.

Lastly, I attached the limbs by running thread back and forth with a long needle. I used buttons to help hold the the limbs in place while maintaining movement.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/133/410955193_a19257091b.jpg?v=0"H SPACE 50

I planned to make this guy some clothes and I found a great doll coat pattern at the libray, but after putting him together I feel he is perfectly happy in his birthday suit. Thus he is finished, and "Adventures in Doll Making Pt. 3: Clothing" will have to be post-poned for another day and another doll.

Adventures in Doll Making Pt. 1: Sculpting

As a kid I loved to make dolls out of corn stalks, rocks, sticks, and weeds. My sister and neighbor and I would play in my Mother's rock garden for hours. We’d each claim a cluster of rocks for our dolls to live in and thus have an entire doll neighborhood.

On the surface, doll making seems like a cheesy hobby, and in some cases it is. But if you look a little deeper you’ll find it can be a really beautiful art form. The Grand Rapids library has a good selection of books on the subject and there are many examples of doll making on the internet.
Eric Sanko
Tomothy Haugen
Scott Radke
I’m sure there are many more as I’ve just begun to scratch the surface.

Yesterday I began to sculpt my first doll. I decided to keep it simple; a rabbit head with a tubular human body.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/128/399943553_535fd8d059.jpg?v=0"

There are lots of profession doll making supplies, which I don’t have, but I gathered a few useful items: paper clay, water, rags, paper towel, aluminum foil, paint brushes, a razor blade, scissors, toothpicks and reference photos.

First I formed two lumps of aluminum foil, one head and one torso. I then covered these with the clay and connected them with a neck. In retrospect I wish I would have reinforced the neck with a toothpick or a straight pin. Instead I simply reinforced it with more clay. I sculpted four simple limbs and sculpted two ears which I wrapped around the end of a paint brush to get a bit of a curl.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/161/399943550_d921467e5d.jpg?v=0"

To attach the limbs, I simple poked a toothpick through the torso and slid the limbs in place. When I’m ready to assemble the doll I will run string through each piece and tie it off, likely with a tiny button to reinforce the knots.

I then added a little bunny tail, which I had forgotten. I painted a coat of water over the entire surface of the rabbit to smooth out any fingerprints.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/162/399943547_45151dc9dc.jpg?v=0"

I will let the rabbit doll dry for a couple of days disassembled. I might put it in the oven at a low temperature to make sure I have removed all of the moisture from the clay, but with paper clay that is not really necessary. In step two, I will sand, paint, and varnish the doll. I will then make clothing.

As for the paint job, I’m thinking of perhaps doing an old fashion black with a white face. Sort of like early Mickey Mouse. But then again, maybe I’ll keep the natural color and just paint on features.

No Posts Vs. Boring Posts

I have not posted lately (other than depressing pet updates) thus I am forcing myself to post. If nothing interesting is going on in my life then perhaps by forcing myself to blog, interesting things will happen......hmmm...we shall see. In the mean time, my "filler" post of the day is my non-objective drawing, which I completed yesterday for Advanced Drawing Class at Oakland Community College.

Good News and Really Bad News

So good news first, Monday was my birthday and I got lots of nice gifts which I illustrated with a big fat marker for your viewing pleasure.

<IMG SRC="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/174/383311965_d61f464967.jpg?v=0"

And the bad news...I found out that my dog has some serious health issues. The vet says she has a growth in her esophogus, right by her heart and it may be a tumor, she has an enlarged heart, a weird spot on her spine, a bad liver and a possible twist in the intestines....but get this he doesn't really know what is wrong for sure, $352 dollars later he gave her three types of medicines and said to come back and he'll look at her again. I am so upset about this. We took her in to the vet about two weeks ago... he said she had a sinus infection and sent her home with antibiotics...suddenly she started limping and lost a lot of weight. I am so upset...I love my dog so much. I just lost my cat and now this. I swear I'm never getting another pet for as long as I live. Sure they are cute and furry and happy but don't give into their charms they will get old and sick and break your heart. This totally sucks.

Katie Cat

Today my dear cat Katie ran out of lives and had to be put to sleep. She was just two months shy of 21 years. She is the only cat I've ever had. My heart is really sad right now but it's nice to think about how I grew up with her. I can still remember going to get her when I was barely three years old. When I started going to school she would hide around the corner every morning and attack my ankles. My sister and I use to torment her and dress her up in doll clothes and push her in a baby buggy. She was a beautiful and graceful calico cat, and this picture with a frog on her head doesn't do her any justice. When I look at her she is so familair. It's hard to explain but she feels like home, like childhood and like love. She was greatly loved and cared for and she will be deeply missed.
